Questioning Strategies LEVELLED QUESTIONS A Level 1 question is literal (the answer can be found in the text) or Knowledge (questions usually require students to identify information in basically the same form it was presented). Very concrete and pertains only to the text. Asks for facts about what has been heard or read. Information is recalled in the exact manner/form it was heard. Example “Harrison Bergeron:” Who calls himself the Emperor? Words used in level 1 questions include: know, who, define, what, name, where, list, when, describe identify, observe, recite, and scan A Level 2 question is interpretive (the answer can be inferred based on textual evidence) or Analysis (question asks a student to break down something into its component parts, to identify reasons, causes, or motives and reach conclusions or generalizations). The answer can be inferred from the text. Information can be broken down into parts. Questions involve examining in detail, analyzing motives or causes, making inferences, finding information to support generalizations or decision making. The Questioning Strategies — OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS Open-ended questions are ones that require more than one word answers. Open-ended questions require a response with more depth and a lengthier response. Open-ended questions are also helpful in finding out more about a person or a situation. An open-ended, text-dependent question is defined by having multiple possible responses and requiring students to ground their responses in evidence from the text.
