Abstract

In the laboratory exercise that we have conducted, we determined the density

and specific weight of a sample liquid. By doing so, the first thing we did was choose a sample
liquid, weigh a graduated cylinder, fill the same graduated cylinder with some amount of
sample liquid, weigh the cylinder with a sample and measure the sample’s temperature.
SAMPLE COMPUTATIONS:

a.) Density, Ps = ms / vs

Ps = (987.52 / 1000)1000 = 987.57 kg/m3

b.) Specific Weight, ℽs = Ps g

ℽs = (987.57)(9.81)/1000 = 9.68 KN/m3

c.) % Difference = [(AV - EV) / AV ]100

*Density

[(984 – 989.47) / 984 ]100

= 0.51%

*Specific Weight

[(9.65 – 9.71) / 9.65 ]100

= 0.62%
Analysis and Interpretation of
Data and Result
Based on the data sheet, groups 5 to 6’s trial has the highest density and specific weight. They
have gathered 993.7 kg/m3 and 993.9 kg/m3 respectively for density and for the specific weight,
both group has 9.75 KN/m3. Overall, the results that we have gathered was close from the
accepted value of density and specific weight so therefore, the laboratory exercise was a
success.

CONCLUSION

This lab can be considered successful as we were able to understand the principles and
instruments used in this laboratory exercise and determined the density and specific weight of
a sample liquid
Answer to the Following:

1.) What will happen to the density of a liquid if heated from lower to higher temperature? Will
the density increase or decrease? Why?

Most matter increases in volume when it gets hotter. The increase in the volume of
matter with increasing temperature is called expansion. When cooled down, most
matter decreases in volume and increases in density.

2.) What may be the cause of the difference in specific weights of water taken from different
sources?

The specific weight of a liquid varies only slightly with pressure, depending on the bulk
modulus of the liquid, it also depends on temperature, and the variation may be considerable.

(1204500/ 1415842) 1000 = 850.7 kg/m3 (2653/ 50) = 53.1 lb/ft3

Specific Weight, ℽs = Ps g Specific Weight, ℽs = Ps g

(850.7)(9.81)/1000 = 8.35KN/m3 (53.1)(9.81)/1000 = 0.52KN/m3

4.) Specific gravity of oil 8.95

Specific Weight, ℽs = Ps g

(860)(8.95)/1000 = 8.471KN/m3
