ARTS AND CULTURE EVENTS

Mga Bagong Kristo sa Lumang Simboryo

In line with Artinformal’s new curator led exhibitions program at our gallery in
Greenhills, we are pleased to present Mga Bagong Kristo sa Lumang Simboryo, a
group show curated by Norman Crisologo which opens on February 8, 2018, and
runs until March 31.

The exhibition focuses on the relationship of religious imagery and iconography in

today’s times. If art in religion was once used to inspire – or even terrify – the
devoted, what happens after a millennia’s worth of bombardment of the same
pictures? What becomes of the sublime? What is man to a god and a god to a non-
believer?

It is with this in mind that the fourteen artists for this show – Ian Fabro, Robert
Langgeneger, Tatong Torres, Jigger Cruz, Manuel Ocampo, Kawayan de Guia,
Alwin Reamillo, JC Jacinto, Salvador Alonday, Marija Vicente, Luis Santos, Gene

1
Paul Martin, Jojit Solano, and Oca Villamael – continue this dialogue, showcasing
the taut and tenuous pull that religion holds for us all.

Norman Crisologo is a former artist turned art collector, curator, art writer and
contributor.

Murmur Of The Wind, A Solo Exhibition by Nile Pobadora

Altro Mondo Arte Contemporanea is pleased to present MURMUR OF THE WIND,

a solo exhibition by Nile Pobadora at Altro Mondo at The Picasso, (3rd Floor,
Picasso Boutique Serviced Residences, 119 LP Leviste st., Salcedo Village, Makati
City).

2
Nile Pobadora presents recent works with his signature imagery and technique.
Producing acrylic paintings on paper, Pobadora explores the realms of the
subconscious and man’s perceived realities. He depicts images that are familiar
enough for the viewer to sympathize with yet too other wordly in rendition that his
works set themselves a good distance from the viewer’s reality.

Contemporary artist and writer Gwen Bautista wrote, “In this show, Pobadora
presents us again with an alternative reality: one that cannot be captured by any
device, thus, indicating a staggered part of ourselves; stuck and inside a dimension
where we are allowed to tread freely and without hesitation.”

Nile Pobadora is a Filipino contemporary artist who has graduated from Far Eastern
University with a degree in Advertising Arts. He consistently participates in group
exhibitions around Metro Manila since 2005. Before formally exhibiting his work,
he has been twice recognized as one of the finalists in Shell’s National Art
Competition.

MURMUR OF THE WIND will be on view at Altro Mondo at The Picasso from 26
January until 18 March, 2018. For inquiries, please call call +632-501-3270 to 71 or

Glimmering Illuminations

Vermillion is a shade linking red and orange much similar to the color of fire.
According to the psychology of color hues in this shade are associated with high
energy and desired for its attention grabbing qualities. Seeing these colors trigger an
emotional reaction that signals our body to increase the oxygen supply to the brain.
In effect, it leaves us with an invigorated feeling and stimulates mental activity.

Among these shades is orange which has been used as trademark of royalty such as
the monarchs of the Netherlands and Thailand. This color is symbolic of strength
and endurance, two qualities that make for a promising new year.

Glass sculpture artist, Marge Organo, embraces the color of warmth in her latest
show GLIMMERING ILLUMINATIONS. This collection features Organo's
skillfully colored optic glass sculptures in warm tonal hues that range from orange
to red. Breathing new innovation into her work is a new medium. She adorns these
pieces with a touch of gold. Using gold leaf encapsulations, the effect creates a soirée
between color, light and shape within her signature medium.

5
Each piece offers an unorthodoxed view inside layered optic glass allowing viewers
and collectors to admire this curated palette of colors. It is her personal guarantee
that no two pieces are ever alike as her style remains consistent in practice.

Although having entered the art scene fairly recently, Organo has honed her skills in
quite a short period of time. Having semi-retired from a career in the pharmaceutical
industry, Organo – already a mother of four adult children – decided to take her
nascent passion for art and forge a solo career in the art scene. Starting with the
rudiments of painting by taking formal lessons in 2014, she moved on to sculpture
by pursuing studies in glass sculpture at the prestigious and internationally renowned
Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. In New York, she learned
coldworking and glass lamination under the tutelage of topnotch Czech artists,
among the world’s most renowned masters of glass. Taking various techniques from
different fields – including tile mosaic and construction, she honed her technique to
the point of mastery before returning to the Philippines, where receptive critics were
quick to hail her practice. After several one-woman exhibitions in Makati, Organo
made her first major debut in last year’s ManilART at SMX in SM Aura with her
exhibit “Kaleidoscopic Visions.”

Marge Organo's "GLIMMERING ILLUMINATIONS"' will be on view from

Sa Wakas, A Pinoy Rock Musical

Created and produced by Charissa Pammit, it is a Pinoy rock musical featuring the
songs of Sugarfree. Performing live at Power Mac Center Spotlight Theater (Circuit
Makati) April 7, 2018.

About The Show

Sa Wakas is a critically acclaimed, homegrown musical based on the songs of one
of the country’s most beloved rock bands, Sugarfree. Co-written by Andrei Nikolai
Pamintuan and Mariane Abuan, with the music beautifully arranged by Ejay Yatco,
Sa Wakas was one of the first to bring together the world of pop rock and theater in

7
one groundbreaking musical. The show is created and produced by Charissa Pammit
and is presented with the Manila Fringe Festival.

A bittersweet story set in contemporary Manila, Sa Wakas raises the timeless

question of why relationships fall apart. What makes the show unique is its
unconventional perspective, adopting an inverse chronology wherein the narrative
begins at the end of the crushing breakup and works its agonizing way backwards to
the relationship’s starry-eyed beginning.

The Music
Sugarfree was an alternative rock group that was formed in 1999 and composed of
Ebe Dancel (lead vocals/guitar) Jal Taguibao (bass/backup vocals) and Kaka
Quisimbing (drums) who replaced Mitch Singson (drums) in 2006. Together, they
released five albums: Sa Wakas (2003), Dramachine(2004), Tala-Arawan (2006),
Sugarfree Live! with the Manila Symphony Orchestra (2008), and Mornings and
Airports (2009). They spawned a variety of pop rock hits such as “Mariposa”,
“Burnout”, “Wag Ka Nang Umiyak”, “Tulog Na”, “Hari ng Sablay” and “Makita
Kang Muli”.

The group sadly disbanded in 2011, and held their memorable farewell concert
“Paalam Pilipinas” in a rainy yet jam-packed Eastwood Plaza. Ebe Dancel now
continues to make music as a solo artist under Star Records and has recently

8
launched his album with the hit single, “Bawat Daan” – the very same one he
composed for the musical back in 2013.

Sa Wakas aims to re-introduce these heart-wrenching songs to a new generation and

present it with a fresh and distinct “broadway-fied” sound.

“Pusuan ang Sining” at Pasinaya 2018

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) will once again open its doors and
offer unique artistic experiences with a see-all-you-can-and-pay-what-you-can
scheme at the Pasinaya Open House Festival, happening on February 3 and 4, 2018
in all the center's performance and rehearsal venues, as well as partner museums in
Manila and Pasay City.

9
Now on its 14th year, the Pasinaya Open House Festival is the country's biggest
multi-arts festival, gathering the best of the best in the art community and featuring
performances of the CCP resident companies and other guest artists, film screenings,
mini-workshops, visual arts exhibitions, artists' market, museum hopping, among
others.

This year's festival focuses on “Pusuan ang Sining.” The CCP believes that to make
arts matter to people deeply, it has to engage one's soul and heart. It aims to raise the
Filipino hearts and reassert the souls by protecting the country's artistry and
creativity.

Through the Pasinaya, the CCP fulfills its duty to both artists and audiences by
providing a platform for the artists to showcase their talents and reach out to the
audiences, while developing art appreciation and understanding among the people.
By doing so, the people would be able to recognize that a deeper appreciation of art
can drive innovation and play a key role in the national and social development.

10
Fresh from last year's success, the open house festival continues its two-part
program, dubbed Palihan at Palabas. In Palihan, happening on the first day of the
festival, the guests can "workshop all they can” from 8:45a.m. to 4:45p.m. at the
different CCP venues.

With workshop-all-you-can-and-pay-what-you-can, for a suggested donation price

of P50, participants may go in and out of the different CCP venues to attend the 30-
minute workshops in various art disciplines conducted by leading artists, resource
persons and teachers. There will be workshops for visual arts and literature.

11
For dance, the Pasinaya Palihan will include workshops in hiphop, ballroom, folk
dance, ballet for kids and adults, modern ballet and creative movement for teachers.
Theater workshops will include musical theatre, children’s, teens, and adult theater,
playwriting, improv, storytelling, collaborative theater, and directing space.

Music workshops will comprise of classical guitar, rondalla, Philippine musical

instruments, percussion, chamber music, solo singing, children and youth choir
singing, hand-bell ringing and ukulele. For the classical guitar and ukulele
workshops, participants are free to bring their own nylon-stringed guitars and
ukuleles.

12
There will be Palabas in the second day of the festival. Here, the audiences can watch
films, immerse themselves in various exhibits and experience various performances
by the Ballet Philippines, the Philippine Ballet Theater, the Philippine Madrigal
Singers, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ramon Obusan Folkloric
Group, Tanghalang Pilipino, the UST Symphony Orchestra, and the National Music
Competitions for Young Artists, and approximately 300 guests performers and
artists.

All performances will be held in every possible venue at the CCP - theaters, lobbies,
hallways, promenade areas, the alley beside the Production Design Center. All
venues are “zoned” according to the art forms and genres such as music, theater,
dance, film, literature, visual arts, children and family, variety and the artists market.

The Pasinaya extends its reach and boundaries beyond the CCP Complex by
partnering with 14 museums, including Casa Manila, Museo Pambata, National
Museum, Met Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, Bahay Tsinoy,
UP Manila Museum of A History of Ideas, 98B Collaboratory and Hub Make Lab,

13
Cinematheque, Museo Marino, Galleria Duemilla, Avellana Art Gallery and NCCA
Gallery.

For the past years, the Pasinaya has attracted thousands of spectators. In 2016, the
Pasinaya welcomed more than 11,150 people in various CCP venues, 3,099 people
went to the various partner museums, and 200 people in the Pasinaya sa Pandacan.
The festival enjoyed more than 52,000 audience viewership. Last year, there were
26 exhibits that the public could view - three art exhibits at the CCP, and 23 in
different museums. Forty-three films were screened - 40 at the CCP venues and three
at the Cinematheque.

Whether you are a newbie in the art, a casual fan or an art aficionado, you will surely
find a reason and see something that will catch your interest at the Pasinaya 2018.

Ballet and Ballads
A tradition in almost all of Ballet Manila’s performance seasons, Ballet & Ballads,
once again returns to the stage to bring music and lyrics to life. And in an effort to
bring ballet to the people and the people to the ballet, the country’s premier
classical dance company plans to close its current season with a star-studded affair.

Ballet Manila CEO and Artistic Director Lisa Macuja-Elizalde muses about the
latest installment, “It combines a singer with ballet numbers—an interesting concept
that we’ve been experimenting with for quite some time now. It’s an entertaining
way to enjoy ballet, especially for first-time audiences.”

Heartthrob crooner Christian Bautista is set to lead the roster of singers as a guest
performer. He’ll sing some of his greatest theater hits, as well as songs from his latest
album.

15
Joining Christian are artists from the Klassikal Musical Foundation (KMF) such as
Andrew Fernando (Baritone), Jade Riccio (Soprano), Stephanie Aguilar (Soprano),
Krisann Manikan Tan (Mezzo Soprano), Leo Angelo Lanuza (Tenor), and with the
special participation of Dr. George T. Yang (Tenor). This marks the first-ever
creative partnership between the country’s premier classical dance company and
KMF.

The ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra, no less, will serenade the audience during
the entire night. The acclaimed group has also prepared a very special Teleserye suite
featuring a selection of classic hits from the ABS-CBN primetime repertoire. The
show will surely trigger some nostalgia, especially among fans of Filipino pop
culture.

16
Ballet & Ballads will also mark the world premiere of Martin Lawrance’s Aria,
which will feature five acts covering classical operas. The British choreographer
previously partnered with Ballet Manila for the highly acclaimed Rebel and Amid
Shadows. Lisa shares, “He really is a genius when it comes to weaving a ballet
together and exploring movement with different kinds of music. The idea was first to
combine musical theater and ballet. But when he proposed the classical arias
instead, I told him to go for it!”

With such a powerhouse lineup for Ballet & Ballads, the audience is set for pure
enjoyment when the curtains go up in Aliw Theater. As the Prima Ballerina sums it
up best, “Dancing creates a visual representation of music, and when that music is
played live by the ABS-CBN Philharmonic and sung by Christian

Bautista and the KMF classical singers, it complements Ballet Manila’s mastery of
the Vaganova technique. It is really a concert like no other.”

Show Schedules

The newest installment of “Ballet & Ballads” will premiere on February 10, 2018 at
6:00PM at the Aliw Theater. There will be three other shows: February 11,
(3:00PM), February 17 (6:00PM), and February 18 (3:00PM).

Marsha Norman's 'Night, Mother'

To end its 50th season, the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) is
producing a Filipino adaptation of Marsha Norman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama
‘‘Night, Mother. The play has been adapted by Ian Lomogo, and directed by Melvin
Lee, who is known for his outstanding portrayal of the role of Chelsea in PETA’s
musical comedy Care Divas.

20
Coming from a history of presenting grand narratives, PETA hopes to tackle more
intimate, emotionally complex, unsettling and provocative issues that involve the
increasing complexity of urban modern life.

‘‘Night, Mother is a taut and fluid drama by one of America's most talented
playwrights. It won the Dramatists Guild's prestigious Hull-Warriner Award, four
Tony nominations, the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, an the Pulitzer Prize in 1983.

It had its world premiere at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge,

Massachusetts, in December 1982. It opened on Broadway in March 1983, directed
by Tom Moore and starring Anne Pitoniak and Kathy Bates; a film version, starring
Anne Bancroft and Sissy Spacek, was released in 1986.

21
PETA is the first professional theater company in the Philippines to produce the dark
comedy. The company’s adaptation, to be staged from Feb-March 2018 at the
PETA-Phinma Theater, features Eugene Domingo, who is returning to the theater
scene after a five-year hiatus, along with veteran actress Sherry Lara.

Domingo performs the role of Jessie, a divorced woman suffering from epilepsy who
reveals to her mother Thelma (essayed by Lara) of her plans to end her life that very
evening. Over the course of 90 minutes, which happens in real time, audiences are
kept glued to their seats as Thelma desperately convinces her daughter that life is
still worth living.

Director Melvin Lee says that despite it being written and produced back in the 80s,
‘Night, Mother remains to be relevant today, as a thought-provoking play that
touches on the universal human concerns of family relationships, isolation,
alienation and loneliness.

He further notes that ‘Night, Mother talks about issues such as conventional thinking
versus new age thinking, and the questioning of the norms of the typical Filipino.

It also brings forth many issues that are rarely talked about, issues that are still
considered taboo and shrouded in shame like family dysfunction, mental health and
suicide. PETA hopes that this production can serve as a springboard to discuss these
sensitive and private issues.

22
PETA’s ‘Night, Mother runs from February 2 to March 18, 2018 at the PETA
Theater Center, No. 5 Eymard Drive, New Manila, Quezon City. For showbuying
and ticket inquiries, contact PETA Marketing and PR Office at +63927-603-5913 or

'Hakos' Group Exhibition Opens at Tin-aw Art Gallery

Tin-aw Art Gallery welcomes 2018 with its first exhibition titled “Hakos.” The
show features the works of Ambie Abaño, Salvador Alonday, Ralph Barrientos,
Nathalie Dagmang, Brenda Fajardo, Riel Hilario, Noli Principe Manalang, Ferdie
Montemayor, Caroline Ongpin, Anthony Palomo and Ioannis Sicuya.

“Hakos” is a Hiligaynon word which means embrace. The artists interpret the word
in various mediums from pottery, paintings, mixed media, print and sculpture.

In an essay about the show, artist Ioannis Sicuya says “An embrace is somewhat a
paradoxical act; an embrace’s worth and meaning is beyond physical, although it’s
a very physical gesture. We embrace in moments of triumph and elation, and we
embrace in times of defeat and sorrow. It is when we are locked in an embrace that
we are at our most vulnerable but at the same time it is when we can feel more secure.
It can come from a loved one or a well-meaning stranger.”

24
The exhibition runs until February 3, 2018. To view, visit Tin-aw at The Upper
Ground Floor of Somerset Olympia Building, Makati Avenue. For inquiries, please

Ballet Philippines Caps It's 48th season with "Don Quixote"

Ending the season with a flourish, Ballet Philippines stages the lively classic Don
Quixote on February 9-18, 2018 at the CCP Main Theater. Taken from an episode
of Miguel de Cervantes’ tale, the ballet follows the lofty adventures of Don Quixote
into Barcelona. Here, he meets Kitri, an innkeeper’s daughter whom he thinks is his
ladylove Dulcinea. Kitri, in turn, is enamored by Basilio, the poor local barber of
whom her father doesn’t approve. Mayhem ensues as the gentleman from La
Mancha unwittingly helps the two lovers have their happy ending.

Don Quixote is the perfect show for those watching ballet for the first time. A light
and fun story, it is ballet’s rom-com. But it is also perfect for die-hard balletomanes,
who will surely look out for Don Q’s signature leaps, dizzying turns and death-
defying lifts.

25
A special treat that audiences will delight in is international Guest Artist Joseph
Gatti, who will perform on special gala nights. Mr. Gatti is a former principal dancer
with Cincinnati Ballet and Corella Ballet. The winner of various prestigious
international ballet competitions including the New York International Ballet
Competition and World Ballet Competition, Mr. Gatti has been invited to perform
as a guest principal artist in companies and in international ballet galas in the USA,
South America, Japan, Europe and Russia. He will partner BP’s resident guest artist
Candice Adea while the Manila Symphony Orchestra will play live, conducted by
Jeffrey Solares.

26
The regisseur (restager) of the ballet is Adam Sage, who returns to BP as its
Associate Artistic Director and Ballet Master. Mr. Sage has performed, taught,
coached and choreographed in four continents for nearly three decades. After
his stint with BP in 1981 to 1983, he danced with Ballet West, Ballet Memphis,
Hong Kong Ballet, and National Dance Company of Boputhatswana in South Africa.
He also founded and served as artistic director of Missouri Ballet Theatre.

Aside from Mr. Gatti and Ms. Adea, the principal roles of Kitri and Basilio will be
portrayed by BP company members Jemima Reyes, Monica Gana, Victor Maguad
and Ian Ocampo.

Catch this very special run of Don Quixote on February 9-18, 2018 at the CCP Main

Drawing From Life

Altro Mondo Arte Cotemporanea is pleased to present Drawing from Life, a group
exhibition by Cebuano realist painters at Altro Mondo Arte Contemporanea gallery,
(3rd Floor, Greenbelt 5, Ayala Center, Makati City).

30
Artists from the Aroma Art Academy formed in Toledo, Cebu, come to exhibit their
recent works to showcase various scenes from their distinct, individual perspectives.
“Drawing from Life” aims to shed light on the beauty of the Filipino’s everyday.
Gathered as serious realist painters, the members of the Aroma Art Academy make
it a point to produce art in its highest, most dignified form, and that is through hard
work, diligence, profound technique and skill.

As contemporary realist painters, Alcoseba, Belicario, Bobier, King, Lacorte,

Pautan, Plarisan, and Ypon all strive to translate quiet and ordinary scenes into

31
masterful renditions of pieces of artworks. All hailing from Cebu, which is known
for its realist traditions, these artists bring the long established practice into the
contemporary scene. According to one of the artists, it is in this practice where an
artist’s true skill and talent shall be tested and honed because extreme discipline is
needed to be successful in painting a realistic scene.

DRAWING FROM LIFE will be on view at Altro Mondo in Greenbelt 5 from 16
