In a Homemade Ice Cream Machine, What Effect Does Tinfoil Have on the Temperature of the

Ice Cream?

Did you know Astronaut ice cream has never been taken into space? Astronaut ice cream

is dehydrated and the crumbs could make an individual choke from the flying particles in the air

which could even cause death if someone breathed it in. In this experiment, I will be exploring if

tinfoil has an affect on the temperature of ice cream. This is my hypothesis, If I make an ice

cream with a layer of tinfoil and ice cream without the tinfoil, then the ice cream made with the

tinfoil will be colder.

How Do You Make Ice Cream?

You can make ice cream by the ingredients eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy

whipping cream. First, you will need a large bowl to mix your ingredients. Second, you need to

separate the six egg yolks, put the egg whites in a small bowl, and then mix them well with a

fork. Third, in a medium bowl, mix the heavy whipping cream, milk and vanilla extract together.

Fourth, grab a large pot and then proceed to put all of your mixture in the pot. Cook the mixture

until rings form on the edges. Fifth, pour your base in a bowl and put it in the freezer until

completely frozen. Lastly, scoop your ice cream into a bowl and enjoy! Highly recommended

with sprinkles on the top with a chocolate drizzle(Falkowitz).

Why Is Air a Critical Part Of Ice Cream?

Pickle 2

Air makes up the total volume of ice cream. Without air, the texture of the ice cream

would be different and it would taste plain, too sweet or awful. The density of air has an effect

on ice cream. You can understand this by different brands of ice cream. The brand of ice cream

Straus does not melt as quickly as Baskin and Robbins due to the amount of air in the ice cream.

If the amount of air is too high, the ice cream will melt faster. If the amount of air is lower, it

keeps the ice cream stable. The amount of air have both positive and negative effects(Rohrig).

What Is an Amorphous Or Crystalline Solid? What Type of Solid Is Ice Cream?

An amorphous solid is a solid that has no definite unit cell and has an irregular repeating

structure. A crystalline solid is a solid that has a form and a regular repeating structure. Ice cream

is a crystalline solid. The diffractions through the ice cream is very sharp and shows specific and

sharp melting points. Crystalline solids tend to melt at sharp temperatures. Amorphous solids

soften in different ranges of temperature and they do not break in a clean manner(Crystalline).

Do Amorphous Solids Have a Distinct Melting Point? Why or Why not?

Amorphous solids do not have a distinct melting point. They lack an ordered internal

structure. Their intermolecular force is weaker for them. Amorphous solids do not have a regular

external structure, but rather amorphous solids have a limited rigid fragment. Amorphous solids

can’t be turned into different shapes unlike crystalline solids. Also the physical properties in an

amorphous solid make it melt in a gradual pace, since the bonds can’t break at once.(Science).

What Is an Insulator? Why Is Tinfoil a Good Insulator?

An insulator is a material that keeps heat in and does not let the heat roam freely. Tinfoil

is a good insulator of heat because it can keep its substance the same temperature. Tinfoil

prevents transmission of temperature loses. Tinfoil, unlike paper towels, reflects rays of

temperature to keep the heat in or out. Tinfoil has a high resistance and a low conductivity.

Therefore electrons can not roam freely, which makes the current stay stable(Ring).

How Do You Accurately Measure the Temperature Of Ice Cream?

You can accurately measure the temperature of ice cream using a thermometer. You do this by

first placing a tub of ice cream in the freezer for 12 hours. Your freezer temperature should be set

at 0 degrees fahrenheit. Then, use a candy thermometer to measure temperatures below 0 degrees

fahrenheit. After the 12 hours. Place the thermometer in the middle of the ice cream. You need to

wait for three minutes then record the accurate temperature(Measuring).

I hypothesized that, If I make an ice cream with a layer of tinfoil and ice cream without

the tinfoil, then the ice cream made with the tinfoil will be colder. In my experiment, I made ice

cream and wrapped tin foil to see if the temperature decreased lower than the average 32

fahrenheit. I found that tinfoil impacted the ice cream temperature by decreasing a solid into a

liquid. I had five trials with tinfoil and five trials without. I found the average temperature with

tinfoil was 28.8 degrees fahrenheit. The average temperature without tinfoil was 29.6 degrees

fahrenheit. There was about one degree difference in the averages of the trials. I could then

conclude my hypothesis was correct from my results.
