Course Outcomes

Upon completion, students should have the:

1. ability to explain the basic management principles and the objectives towards
achieving project goals.

2. ability to explain the roles and responsibilities of project manager in construction


projects.

3. ability to apply the various types of planning techniques and project


management software in planning of small construction projects.

prepare construction programme.

4. Able to identify the types of project management software currently used in


construction planning.

Course Description

This course is designed to provide students with the basic principles of management.
This course will provide an overview to organizational and management process in the
construction industry. Emphasis will also be given to the planning techniques adopted in
construction projects. Students will also be introduced to various project management
software commonly used in construction planning.

Syllabus Content

1. Introduction to management principles. Characteristics of project organization:


meeting the needs of time, cost and quantity objectives.

2. Skills and attributes of project managers and their importance in the construction
industry: planning, controlling, organizing delegating, motivating, communication
and leading.

3. Project Planning and implementation in contractor’s organisation.

4. Planning techniques and the application of project management software in


construction planning.
