CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY LESSON PLAN (Long Form)

Student Teacher: Lauren Wilcox     Grade Level:  3     Date:   4-6-2017

State Standard: MA 3.4.2.a Solve problems and make simple statements about quantity
differences (e.g., how many more and how many less) using information represented in
pictographs and bar graphs. Subject:  Math

Name of Lesson: Explore Range, Median, Mode, and Mean      Period / Time:

!
I. Goal: The students will understand how to use tables Required Adaptations/
to find the range, median, mode, and mean of a set of Modifications:
numbers.

!
II. Objectives: Using the table of data that the students Required Adaptations/
have recorded, the students will be able to find the Modifications:
mean, median, mode, and range with 90% accuracy.

!
III: Faith / Values Integration: Working together in Required Adaptations/
groups Modifications:

The students work together to learn the process of
calculating mode, median, range, and mean through
Unifix cubes

IV. Integrated Technology: Calculator Required Adaptations/

VI: Procedure: Required Adaptations/

      Modifications:
A. Set / Hook: Review of lesson one. Together as a class
we will go over the tally chart that we made in class before. To !
introduce the new vocabulary words I will use the chart that we !
made together about the favorite juices and I will explain how
!
to figure out the mean, median, range, and mode. I will bring
the favorite juice that won for them to drink at the beginning of !
the lesson.  (I do) !
 Before
B. Transition:   Throw cups away and return back to !
seat. (Cup of juice will be small and not take long to drink)
! C. Main Lesson:   !
!
!+To learn who to calculate the mode, median, range, and mean !
!
of a set of data we will split up into groups of 5 and explore !
with Unifix cubes. I will have preassigned groups for the !
students to work in.
!+Have each student take a handful of cubes and count the cubes !
!
in his or her handful, then have each student connect the cubes !
into a tower.      !
!+Have the groups place their five towers side by side from the !
!
shortest to the longest and get ready to answer questions about
the data. I will record your findings on the board. (We do)
!
!+Questions asked: Who in your group had the fewest cubes in a During
!
handful? Who in your group had the most cubes in a handful? !
How many cubes was that? What is the difference between the !
largest handful and the smallest handful? This is the range of !
the data.
!+Now ask each group to not how many cubes their are in the !
!
middle stack for their group. Explain that his number is called !
the median of the data because it is in the middle. !
!+Did anyone have the same number of cubes in their handful? !
!
The number of cubes that appears the most is the mode of the !
data.
!T+o find the average/mean of the data, have students count !
!
the number of cubes in all and then divide by the number of !
people in the group. (students can use calculator for this part if !
needed)
!+Have students get together with the partner they made their !
!
!
chart with in the previous class. I will pass out the tally chart
that they made. Students will work together with their partner !
to figure out the mode, median, range, and mean from their After
data. Each student will record their answers underneath their
tally chart and turn it back into me for formative assessment.

D. Transition:  Please return back to your seats.
!
E. Conclusion:   Restate goal and objective together in
unison:
!
Goal: The students will understand how to use tables to
find the range, median, mode, and mean of a set of
numbers.

Objective: Using the table of data that the students have

recorded, the students will be able to find the mean,
median, mode, and range with 90% accuracy.

+Go over their assignment for next class. I will give the
students a sheet of paper that has a grocery list on it. The
list will have the name of a food and next to it will be the
tally number of how many we need. Using this chart the
students will find the mean, median, mode, and range of
the data. (Chart is written below)
!!
VII. Assessment: Formative Assessment through
checking results from partner chart

VIII. Assignment: Students receive a sheet of paper that Required Adaptations/
has a grocery list on it. The list will have the name of a Modifications:
food and next to it will be the tally number of how many
we need. Using this chart the students will find the
mean, median, mode, and range of the data. (Chart is
