Activity I.
Go to the library or search the internet and read about the following persons. Find out
how each person influenced curriculum designs.

a) Carl Rogers
– Carl Rogers nondirective and therapeutic learning is influenced by humanistic design.
Carl Rogers stresses that students draw on their own resources to develop self-understanding
and guide their own behaviour. Also the inclusion of counselling procedures by educators that
inspire genuineness, empathy, and respect for self and others helps to facilitate in learning.
b) Abraham Maslow
– Hierarchy of needs is Maslow’s theory in curriculum design. Maslow believes that
when a child whose needs are not met will not be interested in acquiring knowledge of the
world. Maslow stresses that needs from the lower pyramid such as survival needs, safety
needs, belongingness and love needs, esteem needs, knowing and understanding needs and
self-actualization needs must be met first before an individual consider higher needs.
c) Henry Morrison
– Henry Morrison is a firm believer of the subject-centered design focusing on the
content of the curriculum that corresponds mostly to written subject or textbooks. Morrison
claimed that the subject matter curriculum aimed most to literacy, and therefore should be the
focus of the elementary curriculum. He further cited that such design permitted secondary
students to create interest and competencies in specific subject areas.
d) John Dewey
– John Dewey is a proponent of experience-centered design. For Dewey, he believes
that educators must analyze children’s experiences and see how these experiences formed
children’s knowledge. This is why Dewey required educators to change to focus on students’
needs. Hence, the curriculum would frequently change to focus on students’ needs.
e) Friedrich Froebel
– Friedrich Froebel advocates child-centered deisgn. He claims that children would
achieve self-realization through social participation, which they expressed as the principle of
learning by doing.

Activity II.
Ask at least three people whom you meet (specifically a teacher) to get information and
opinions about the following statements.

1. NAME: Cecil Nemis

1. It is only the teacher who can determine what effective strategy can be used in the
classroom.
Comments:
Agree It is the teacher’s job to formulate effective learning strategies for students to
learn properly in the class.
2. Deep knowledge like reading other reference books is an example of intellectual quality.
Comments:
Agree While we can argue that the advent of internet adoption helps to disseminate
information, reference books remains the primary source for informational
knowledge and guide for students.
3. Connectedness to the world is the most authentic and powerful pedagogy.
Comments:
Agree Teaching is both a learning capacity and social interaction process and to be
a capable educator we interact with people to help them embrace learning and
knowledge.
4. For many students who were high achievers, they really don't need to promote supportive
social environments.
Comments:
Disagree Not necessarily, since even the most outstanding honor students do
participate in social environments like extra-curricular activities, outside school
projects, etc.
5. IT as a tool of learning will only be good to those who are IT literate.
Comments:
Disagree Any person can use IT tools such as computers, projectors, gadgets to their
advantage in the means of education and not only reserved for those who have
an IT degree.

1. It is only the teacher who can determine what effective strategy can be used in the
classroom.
Comments:
Agree Students still needed guidance to improve their learning and knowledge,
therefore teachers is the one that determines the best strategies to be used in
the classroom.
2. Deep knowledge like reading other reference books is an example of intellectual quality.
Comments:
Agree Reference books remain by far the most reliable source of informational
knowledge necessary despite other avenues for students to grab knowledge.
3. Connectedness to the world is the most authentic and powerful pedagogy.
Comments:
Disagree Connectedness to the world is not enough, interaction and experience
remains the best teaching principle.
4. For many students who were high achievers, they really don't need to promote supportive
social environments.
Comments:
Disagree Even the smartest of students do participate and promote supportive social
environments because high achievers themselves are supported heavily by their
parents’ which drives their motivation to learn.
5. IT as a tool of learning will only be good to those who are IT literate.
Comments:
Disagree Technology is readily available to students such computers, laptops,
projectors, etc. and don’t necessarily require IT specialization. It is up to the
students’ own understanding how to effectively use the gadgets for learning.

1. It is only the teacher who can determine what effective strategy can be used in the
classroom.
Comments:
Agree As a teacher, I personally know the best learning strategy that is effective for
my students to learn.
2. Deep knowledge like reading other reference books is an example of intellectual quality.
Comments:
Disagree Students are smart enough to choose which learning resource is needed as
reference books doesn’t truly encompass the aspects of knowledge. There are
more resources available to them that may or may not require reading.
3. Connectedness to the world is the most authentic and powerful pedagogy.
Comments:
Agree Interaction is a powerful pedagogy because we get to socialize with the
people and learn from their own experiences.
4. For many students who were high achievers, they really don't need to promote supportive
social environments.
Comments:
Disagree High achievers need to promote and participate in social environments
because learning isn’t just about academic excellence, it also requires social
interaction and cooperation.
5. IT as a tool of learning will only be good to those who are IT literate.
Comments:
Disagree Using IT devices isn’t just limited to people who took up IT degree. Anyone
can use the said technology since most of these technologies are available to
general consumers especially students.
