Reflection No. 2.

Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.

-William Butler Yeats

The role of the teacher is far more than executing what is written on their lesson
plans, more than following what topics must they teach. And also, it is not about how a
teacher follows a certain curriculum made, designed and should be implemented.
Oftentimes, teachers teaches only what’s on the book. They tend to only develop the
cognitive domain of their students, not knowing or setting aside other factors.
For the past days that I had observed different classes on Grade 9 I noticed that
some students didn’t know the word respect. They act the way they wanted. They utter
the words they want to say. Simply speaking, they act like little child wanting for more
attention and affection. This truth really hits me, as a future educator and molder of
young minds, it is an eye-opener for me that teaching isn’t all about talking in front. It is
not all about your students having to respond in every word you say. It is not about
holding a chalk and giving examples to your discussions. For me, it is about knowing what
they are hearing when I am talking in front. It is about them contemplating on what
should be their response to my questions. It is about what worries them when I am in front
holding the chalk. And most importantly is, “Are they learning values from me?” , “Did I
exhibit a good example that they can look into?”.
The students of today is far more different to what students are before. And with
that, teachers must be different from what teachers are before. In today’s world a
teacher’s role is multifaceted profession; they carry the role of a surrogate parent that
can listen to the stories of their child. A class disciplinarian that would fairly discipline them,
teaching them what is appropriate from not, what is acceptable from not. A mentor and
a counselor that would remind them the beauty of learning. A book keeper that would
keep the records of their achievement and good works. A role model that they can look
up into. A planner that can guide them what is to follow. And being a teacher is far more
than filling the minds of your students, it is about molding them into an individual that is
acceptable and plays a very important role in the society.
