COURSE OUTLINE
Objectives.
The main objectives of this course are as follows:

• To present the underlying principles of water resources management based on


engineering, legal, and socio-economic considerations.

• To present the inter-relationships between the principal elements of a water resources


system.

• To provide a basic understanding of how mathematical techniques and systems analysis


methodology may be employed in the formulation of rational decisions affecting water
resources system design and management.
Subjects.
1. Introduction.
- Scope and objectives of water resources development and management.
- Characteristics of water resources systems.
- General process of water resources planning and management.
2. Basic systems analysis techniques.
- Linear programming.
- Dynamic programming.
- Nonlinear programming.
3. Uncertainty and reliability analysis of hydrosystems.
- Uncertainty analysis.
- Reliability computations.
4. Hydrologic modeling and simulation.

- Streamflow estimation.
- Stochastic modeling of river flow series.
- Deterministic river basin modeling.
5. Planning, design, and management of water systems by project purpose.
- Surface water reservoir systems.
- Multipurpose water resources development.
- Urban stormwater management systems.

Marking Scheme.
- Assignment: 10%.
- Mid-term examination: 25%.
- Final examination: 65%.
