Aluminium Solutions
The aesthetic quality of an interior space is greatly

inter face between different building fabrics is a critical
factor in the appearance of the overall interior finishes.
Well designed features such as bulkheads, changes of
ceiling level and plasterboard perimeters considerably
enhance the aesthetic interest of an interior.
SAS Aluminium Solutions, an extensive range of extru-

Materials
Products are extruded from aluminium alloy.
Finishes
Products are normally supplied with an electrostatically
applied polyester powder finish to exterior quality
BS6496, tested to satisfy a 1000 hour salt spray test
per formance. The standard colour is RAL9010 20%
gloss, alternative colours can be selected from the BS
and RAL ranges.
Special finishes are also available on request:
(1) Natural mill finish.
(2) Anodised in either natural, silver, gold, copper or
brass.
(3) Polished and chemically brightened in either silver,
gold, copper and brass.
(4) High porosity primer is available for dry lining profiles
to provide greater adhesion to conventional dr ywall
jointing and finishing compounds.

Perimeter trims
The extensive range of perimeter trims are designed to
accommodate all types of suspended ceiling system
masking the edges of tiles at both the perimeters and
penetration points within a ceiling. The shadowgap type
perimeter trims provide an additional attractive feature
detail.
Channel trims are generally used for masking the cut
edges of metal ceiling tiles. Wedges hold the tile edge
tightly in place to give a clean finish. A number of self
wedging trims are available for use with System 130
supported on 16mm deep Alugrid-Q.
Threaded trims are designed to match the threadform
details of Alugrid or Alugrid-Q and are used on full tile
perimeter details.
Angle trims are designed for Trucell, mineral fibre and
GRG ceiling tile systems.

Plasterboard perimeters
Utilising a plasterboard margin can provide an attractive
feature to a suspended ceiling and minimises the need
for cut tiles. This solution is particularly effective for
irregular perimeters, corridors and small cellular spaces
with existing structural walls.
Important: Plasterboard should be independently
suppor ted using a M/F system for margin widths over
450mm.

Perimeter trims and shadowgap sections can be rolled margin detail

The range of tile to plasterboard trims is designed to

accommodate all ceiling types with a choice of
shadowgap options. A number of trims feature tapered
fins that permitting the use of conventional tape and
joint finishes to achieve a smooth inter face with the
plasterboard. A range of plasterboard perimeter trims

Plasterboard bulkhead/change of ceiling level
Plasterboard upstand trims can be used to create low
cost bulkhead and changes in ceiling level features. The
appropriate perimeter trim or shadowgap should be
used to suppor t and mask the edge of the higher level
ceiling tiles or plasterboard.

Metal bulkheads can be constructed using aluminium
extrusions and standard metal tiles.
A choice of vertical, 45° and 30° angled bulkheads
sections are available to create an attractive feature be
it a change in ceiling level or an inter face with another
building element. By using standard products, these
extrusions offer a high quality low cost solution that is
ideal for modest budgets or smaller projects where
special fabrication is not feasible.

Partition head fixing to threaded tee sections
A number of tee sections incorporate a continuous M6
threadform to provide a fixing point and give lateral
restraint to partition systems. This threadform can also
be used for fixing lightweight signs and fixtures.
Non-magnetic Aluminium Tee Suspension Grids
SAS tee sections can be used to create aluminium
suspension grids of almost any size. Aluminium tee grid
systems are ideal for applications such as radiotherapy
rooms where only non-magnetic components may be
used.
The tee sections can be supplied with milled ends to
provide superior junctions with other sections. The end
mill is normally applied to the cross tee sections to so
that the vertical section of the cross tee abuts the
splice plate retainer nibs of the main tee. This allows a
flush junction between the visual face of the tee sec-
tions. The sections are secured by riveting 90° splice
plates at each junction.
Aluminium tee suspension grids can be used to support
both rebated and square edge ceiling tiles. It is how-
ever, critical that the face dimensions of the ceiling tile
to be used is provided at time of order, particularly
where rebated tiles are to be installed.
For non-magnetic installations it is essential that alu-
minium splice plates and hangers are used, and that
the infill tile be either aluminium or mineral.

Dry Lining Profiles
The range of dr y lining profiles are designed to provide
feature attractive details within drywall applications. To
allow traditional tape and joint finishing the profiles
feature punched, tapered and ribbed fins.
Dry lining profiles are supplied with a polyester powder
finish to exterior quality BS6496, tested to satisfy a
1000 hour salt spray test per formance to RAL9010 as
standard or with a high porosity primer giving greater
adhesion to traditional finishing compounds.
Custom extrusions and prefabricated units can be
produced to meet individual requirements.

Design Considerations
SAS dr y lining profiles can be used in ceilings, walls and
partitions incorporating single or multiple layers of
plasterboard. They can be fixed to constructions based
on timber framing, metal studs and metal furring chan-
nels. In order to minimise cutting, wastage and to allow
for the inclusion of any additional framing, setting out
should be planned before fixing commences. All profile
joints and ver tical profiles should be suppor ted by
framing members with additional framing members
where such features occur between normal framing
centres. Where plasterboard is removed to allow for
installation of profiles, fire resistance and sound attenu-
ation may be modified. Multiple layers of plasterboard
will assist per formance levels and increase the rigidity
of the system. Where bull nosings are fitted, the plaster-
board lining should extend sufficiently to provide con-
tinuous support between fixing fins.

Installation
Erect the framing and fix plasterboard lining in accord-
ance with the required specification. Cut SAS profiles as
necessar y using a fixed power saw. Accurate cutting will
facilitate neat butt and mitred joints. Test fit the pro-
files. Three fixing methods are available, dependent on
circumstance.
Note: For best results the ribbed area of the tapered
fins for both the polyester powder coated and high
porosity primed versions should be abraded allowing the
plaster finishes to key the sur face though the punched
holes to the plasterboard.
1) For optimum durability and where joint treatment may
be delayed, SAS profiles should be mechanically pre-
fixed. Use a low speed screwdriver and drywall screws
of a suitable length to engage the framing. Screw fix
through the holes in the fixing fin at all profile joints and
where it crosses framing members horizontally or at
150mm centres where the profiles run along the line of
the framing. Plasterboard nails may be used in place of
screws when fixing to timber framing. Make sure that
the screw or nail heads are driven home fully to prevent
fouling during joint treatment.
2) As an alternative, where the solid sur face of the
profile will be in contact with the lining, a suitable
plasterboard sealant or adhesive can be applied as a
5mm bead to the lining sur face. Position the profile and
press firmly along its length. Where the bead is applied
to a cut edge, apply PVAC bonding agent as a pre-
treatment.
Note: SAS skirting profiles should be fixed by applying a
5mm bead of plasterboard sealant or adhesive to the
base of the lining prior to positioning the skir ting. This
should be firmly bedded into the bead mechanically
fixed through the fixing fins. Countersink two screws
through the framing at each joint of the skirting.
3) For sufficiently rigid backgrounds where the finished
work is not subject to impact, SAS profiles can be fixed
by bedding in jointing material and followed immediately
with joint treatment. Apply suitable joint filler to the
board surface which will be in contact with the fixing fin.
Press the profile into the filler along its length and
flatten out the filler forced through the holes in the fin.
As with any product used with plaster and plasterboard
finishes, care should be taken to ensure the products
are installed in the correct relative humidity and that
accelerated dr y out is not recommended.
Joint Treatment
After the SAS profiles have been fixed, apply joint filler
as required over the fixing fin and adjacent board and
bed joint tape firmly into the filler. Take care that the
tape does not overlap the shoulder of the profile.
Complete the joint by finishing flush with the shoulder
with suitable joint finish or joint cement feathered out to
the board sur face as required. Carefully remove any
surplus material from the profile with a damp cloth or
sponge.
Finishing
SAS dr y lining profiles are pre-finished in polyester
powder to RAL9010 white. The use of a suitable dr ywall
sealer will help to equalise the absorption characteris-
