BOOK: the COMPOUND EFFECT – jumpstart your income, your life, your success – Darren Hardy

Ch1. The compound effect in action

1. You’ll win the competition because of the positive habits and consistency in applying those
habits
2. Consistency is the ultimate key to success
3. “Be the guy who says ‘no’. It’s no great achievement to go along with the crowd. Be the
unusual guy, the extraordinary guy.”
4. Keep sight of the good, old-fashioned value of hard and consistent work
5. The compound effect is the principle of reaping huge rewards from a series of small, smart
choices.
a. Even though results are massive, the steps in the the moment don’t feel significant
6. You can use this strategy for improving your health, relationships, finances, or anything else , the
changes are subtle
7. Small, Smart choices + Consistency + Time = RADICAL DIFFERENCE

THE Magic Penny

8. Given a choice between taking $3M in cash this very instant and a single penny that doubles in
value every day for 31days, which would you choose?
a. By day 31….Penny doubles becomes $10,737,418.24

FOOD
RIPPLE EFFECT
9. You only need to take a series of tiny steps, consistently, over time, to radically improve your life.

Success, Old School

10. Most challenging aspect of Compound Effect is that we have to keep working away for a while,
consistently and efficiently, before we can begin to see the payoff
11. Complacency has impacted all great empires, ex: Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Spanish etc.
12. People get to a certain level of success and get too comfortable
13. Understanding the compound effect will rid you of “insta-results” expectation

SUMMARY: Put the compound affect to work for you. Summary action steps
14. Write out few excuses you’re clinging to (not smart enough, no experience, wrong upbrining,
don’t have the education etc.)
a. Make up in hard work and personal development to outcompete anyone – including
your old self
15. Write out the half dozen small, inconsequential steps you can take every day that can take your
life in a completely new and positive direction (habits)
16. Write down small actions that you can stop doing that might be compounding your results
downward
17. List a few areas, skills, or outcomes where you have been most successful in the past. Consider
wheter you could be taking those for granted and are not continuing to improve, and are
therefore in jeopardy of having that complacency lead to future failure

CHAPTER 2
18. Our choices can be our best friend or our worst enemy. They can deliver us to our goals or send
us orbiting into a galaxy far, far away.
19. Each choice starts a behavior that over time becomes a habit.
20. Make empowering choices

Cool:
21. Keep a thanks giving journal for my wife. Every day for an entire year I logged at least 1 thing I
appreciated about her – the way she interacted with her friends, how she cared for our dogs,
the fresh bed she prepared, a succulent meal she whipped up, or the beautiful way she styled
her hair that day – whatever. I looked of the things my wife was doing that touched me, or
revealed attributes, characteristics, or qualities I appreciated for a year.….. give it to her
following thanksgiving. (Focus on wife’s positive aspects)

22. OWNING 100 percent

a. “What percentage of shared responsibility do you have in making a relationship work?”
i. You have to give 100% with zero expectation of receiving anything in return
b. Only when you’re willing to take 100% responsibility for making the relationship work
will it work
c. A relationship left to chance will always be vulnerable to disasters

23. People think they take responsibility for their life….then you look at how most people operate in
the world; there’s a lot of finger pointing, victimhood, blaming, expecting someone lse or the
government to solve their problems.
24. You alone are responsible for what you do, don’t do, or how you respond to what’s done to
you.

GETTING LUCKY
25. Difference between become rich, happy, healthy, or broke, depressed, unhealthy, is the choices
you make throughout life. “Unlucky is an excuse”

26. Formula for Getting Lucky:

a. Preparation (personal growth) +
b. Attitude: (belief/mindset) +
c. Opportunity (a good thing coming your way)+
d. Action (doing something about it) =
e. LUCK
27. You are freed by your choices, as long as you assume personal responsibility for them
28. The first step toward change is awareness: If you want to get from where you are to where you
want to be, you have to start by becoming aware of the choices that lead you away from your
desired destination.
29. Become very conscious of every choice you make today so you can begin to make smarter
choices moving forward
30. TRACK EVERY ACTION that relates to area of your life you want to improve
a. Get out of debt: Track every penny you pull from your pocket
b. Lose weight: Track everything put in mouth

31. The magic is in the doing of simple things repeatedly and long enough to ignite the miracle of
the Compound Effect

32. Track your life with the same intention: to bring your goals within sight
33. Tracking is a simple exercise – it works bc it brings moment-to-moment awareness to actions you
take in the area of your life you want to improve.
