Name(s) of Academic Staff: • Dr. Michelle Ng Yeen Tan • Ms. Kokila Thiagarajah • Dr. Tan Gim Cheong 10. Course Objective: This course aims to introduce the students to the fundamental concepts of pathology for a better understanding of the changes in cellular, tissue and organs structure and functions associated with diseases. 11. Course Learning Outcomes: After completing this course, students should be able to: 1. Define the term and the subject of pathology and discuss the types of injures and the mechanisms of their repair and healing. 2. Analyse the cellular changes that mark benign and malignant tumors and explain the tissue changes that lead to common medical emergency. 3. Discuss the outcome of exposure to air, water and soil pollution, and smoking, alcohol and drug abuse. 4. Relate the common diseases of the respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, genito-urinary system, musculoskeletal system, hepatobiliary system and heart diseases to the basic pathological changes. 5. Describe the basic steps in histopathology. 6. Identify the abnormalities in cells and tissues affected by inflammation, malignancy and other disorders. 12. Course Synopsis: This course provides general introduction to the two divisions of pathology, basic and systemic pathology. Basic pathology includes cellular, tissue and organs reactions to acute and persistent stresses; acute and chronic inflammation; neoplasia, characteristics of malignant and benign tumors; and systemic pathology. 13.
