6th Grade Science Syllabus 17-18

Mr. Hubbard

Content: This year we’ll be focusing on Earth and space science, this combined with 7th and
8th grade science will cover major disciplines of science. The topics covered this year include
the following sorted by unit.
Earth History: rock cycle, fossils, earth’s formation, tectonic plates, and the law of superposition.
Weather and Climate: dichotomous keys, plant vs animal cells, weather, water cycle, biomes,
energy resources, and climate.
Space: star life cycle, HR Diagram, the moon, our solar system, the sun, and (kepler’s laws if
time allows)

Pacing: The year is broken into three trimesters:

Trimester 1: Earth History
Trimester 2: Weather and Climate
Trimester 3: Space

Expectations: This should be a fun year offering hands on activities to explore science. Work
and behavior expectations will need to be followed in order for students to master content and
stay on schedule.
Behavior: Students are expected to raise hands when asking questions or responding with
answers rather than shouting out. Students will be expected to self advocate and ask for
additional help when needed in class. However remediation will occur if necessary.
Work: Students will be expected to complete all work in complete sentences when possible,
write their full name, homeroom, and the date the assignment was handed out on graded
material. Not attempting to answer a question will result in a loss of points above the question
value (this is to encourage effort). Work will be turned in on time or points will be deducted, 10%
= 1 day, 25% = 2 days, 50% = 3 days, and anything over that is a zero.

Testing Policies and Procedures: Tests will be announced at least one school week in
advance, quizzes may not be. Test and quiz dates may change to a future date if it is taking
longer than expected to master content. A study guide will be provided for tests, answers should
be found in the guided notes from that unit or in the textbook. It is students responsibility to
review the material from the unit as well as use their study guide to prepare for the test. The day
before the test students will have the opportunity to ask questions about the study guide they
are still struggling with. We will also review the format of the test (multiple choice, short answer,
matching…)
