Honoring Clayton Kershaw Outstanding banquet

Banquet: Members of the South Oklahoma
City Chamber of Commerce held the 2018
annual banquet in the Cox Convention Center
to honor outstanding individuals in the
community and to install the new board of
directors. Elaine Lyons is South Oklahoma
City Chamber president.
Honorees: Linda Richardson won Ambas-
sador of the Year; Karen Proctor, Volunteer of
the Year; David Greenwell, Citizen of the Year;
and Anne Hillerman, Native Daughter Award.
(Also mentioned during the award were
Anne’s late father, Tony Hillerman and his late
brother Barney Hillerman.)

Gala: The 19th annual Warren Spahn
Awards Gala honoring Clayton Kershaw,
of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the top left-
handed pitcher in the National League,
was held at the Oklahoma City Golf &
Country Club. This is the fourth time that
Kershaw has received the magnificent
bronze Warren Spahn trophy sculpted
by artist Shan Gray. (For baseball lovers,
his on-field statistics, for which he won
the award, during the season included 18
wins, 202 strikeouts and an ERA of .231.
He is also a three-time Cy Young Award
winner.) At the Gala, Kershaw and his
lovely wife Ellen were so gracious to all of
the star-struck baseball fans.
Fanfare: The event, presented by the
Bricktown Rotary Club and Oklahoma
Sports Hall of Fame, followed a news
conference and a VIP reception. Dodger
blue, white and red were used in table
flower bouquets and the evening ended
with a rousing rendition of the guests
singing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.”
Co-chairmen were Chuck Shirley and
Brittany Leemaster. Bob Carpenter,
announcer for the Washington Nationals,
was the emcee.
Ferguson Jenkins Award: Kershaw spent
time with the other outstanding award
winners during the night. They included
top high school students. Five base-
ball players and a baseball coach were
given the Ferguson Jenkins Outstanding
student athlete award. They included
Carson Orton, Heritage Hall; Ryan Gen-
dron, Bishop Kelley; Tyler Polk, Duncan;
Javier Ramos, Vian; Braxton Bohrofen,
Westmoore; and Coach Joe Patterson,
Westmoore.
Michele Smith Award: Five outstanding
Oklahoma high school softball players
were also honored, along with a softball
coach. They were Mary Collins, Broken
Bow; Cheyenne Factor, Yukon; Makayla
Jackson, Putnam City, Zoe Jones, Mus-
tang, Audrie LaValley, Carl Albert, and
Coach Jaime Roberts, Mustang. These high
school awards are presented by the Okla-
homa City Public School Resource Center.

Inaugural dinner: Dr. Sam D. Dahr was
honored as the 117th president of the
Oklahoma County Medical Society at a
dinner at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country
Club. Two hundred friends and colleagues
attended the party, which featured
dancing to the music of DJ from M&M
Productions.
Dr. Dahr: Dr. Dahr is chairman of the Oph-
thalmology Department at Integris Baptist.
He specializes in medical and surgical retina,
Robert Badell, Carl Kovacs, Ferguson Jenkins, and Johnny Royal. uveitis/autoimmune eye disease and ocular
oncology. He is a graduate of Heritage Hall
School, Stanford University and the Univer-
sity of Oklahoma College of Medicine. His
residency and fellowship were at the Univer-
sity of Cincinnati and he also completed a
fellowship at the National Eye Institute of the
National Institutes of Health.
Also honored: The Don F. Rhinehart Com-
munity Service Award was given to Dr.
William L. Parry for improving the health
systems in the community and leading
groundbreaking work in Oklahoma in the
area of acute renal failure, kidney studies
and renal lymphatics.
Dinner: On the menu for the event was
steak and salmon with a sweet potato and
root vegetables. Desserts were served on
the dessert bar. Black cloths were on the
tables and there were bouquets of white
hydrangeas and white roses in gold bowls.
OCMS: Oklahoma County Medical Society
is a physician’s organization to promote
the art and science of medicine and the
betterment of public health. For 117 years,
OCMS has served its physician members
and the citizens of Oklahoma County.
