● Snow White and the 7 dwarves

○ “Someday My Prince Will Come”
■ Enforces the mythical norm that women ought to wait for a man to be
happy.
■ Enforces passivity and dependency
■ “Considering that Snow White sang the song ‘Someday My Prince Will
Come’ after meeting the prince only once, the animation conforms to the
fairy-tale stereotype of ‘love at first sight.’”
● Enforces the sexual scripts of love and romantic relationships.

● Little Mermaid
○ “Kiss the Girl”
■ Enforces the male dominance and that he should just “kiss the girl” even
though she can’t say anything
■ Again, the women in the relationship is passive and doesn’t speak or do
anything until the man makes a move enforcing the gender
hierarchy in relationships
● This leads to male dominance and can also lead to domestic
violence if a man’s dominance is threatened.

Put on note card: According to Alexander M. Bruce in his article “The Role of the
"Princess" in Walt Disney's Animated Films: Reactions of College Students:” it states
that “each of the princesses has as an ultimate motive finding the right man to marry,
for such marriage represents fulfillment to her: even for those princesses in an
unpleasant situation, marrying their true love is presented as a stronger motivation than
escaping the unpleasant situation.”
This expresses the mythical norm we discussed in class, where women must
continue to wait for something to happen to them. Not the ones taking charge but
waiting for someone to take charge of them.

According to the “Mia Adessa Towbin

Shelley A. Haddock
Toni Schindler Zimmerman
Lori K. Lund
Litsa Renée Tanner”
Article: “Gender, Race, Age and Sexual Orientation in Disney Feature-Length Animated
Films” article, it gives a general definition of how women are portrayed in the disney
films. “Women are more likely to be portrayed as younger than are men (Signorielli,
1999), and as thin.”
According to Dawn Elizabeth England, Lara Descartes, Melissa A. Collier-Meek, in their
scholarly article “Gender Role Portrayal and the Disney Princesses” it states that “ Each of
the Disney Princess movies feature a central
female character, the princess, and a male character who is
romantically linked with the princess”

Continues to enforce gender norms and social scripts involving romantic relationships.
Heteronormative and gender hierarchy.
