Topic: Most Missed Questions from the 4th 6 Weeks Skills Test

Standards & (13) Writing/Writing Process. Students use elements of the writing
Objectives: process (planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) to compose
text. Students are expected to:
(B) structure ideas in a sustained and persuasive way (e.g., using
outlines, note taking, graphic organizers, lists) and develop drafts in
timed and open-ended situations that include transitions and rhetorical
devices used to convey meaning;
(C) revise drafts to improve style, word choice, figurative language,
sentence variety, and subtlety of meaning after rethinking how well
questions of purpose, audience, and genre have been addressed;
(D) edit drafts for grammar, mechanics, and spelling; and
(E) revise final draft in response to feedback from peers and teacher and
publish written work for appropriate audiences.

Activity: Most Missed Questions (Question #20):

Sentence Insertion Activity (10-15 minutes)


- On the powerpoint presentation:
Sofia would like to add the following detail to the first paragraph
(sentences 1-8):
The team just happened to be one of the best in the area, and Vogel’s
mom was the coach.
Where should this sentence be added?
A) After sentence 1
B) After sentence 3
C) After sentence 5
D) After sentence 6
- Students will be given sentence strips with the sentence number
attached to it; they will put the paragraph sentences in order
- Students will read the paragraph aloud with their group or one
volunteer will read aloud to the whole class
- After reading the paragraph, students will be tasked with adding
the new sentence to the paragraph according to the answer
options available to them
- Once students place the sentence they will read it aloud in their
group and discuss why they put the new sentence where they did

Closure: Class discussion at the end of the activity (5 minutes):

What are similarities between your essay revision work today and this
revising question from the skills test?
What are some of the strategies you will use while reading a revision
passage on the STAAR exam?

Assessment: Formative: The students will be formatively assessed by walking around


and checking their work.
