Teaching Statement (M. Jafar Khan)
The transition from industrial sector to academic sector was inspired by my passion of teaching.
The interest for academia comes from positive experience of my undergraduate and post
graduate studies. I perceive teaching as an honorable intellectual activity which besides
instructing the students to explore the new fields also provides me an opportunity to enhance the
understanding of my field of interest. I believe that critical thinking coupled with understanding
of basic physical principals provide the learning foundation of a successful engineer. My teaching
philosophy comprises four tenets (1) motivate students to fully grab the fundamental concepts of
Electrical Engineering (2) guide students to develop critical thinking skills (3) establish big picture
of their field of study through course work (4) last but not least, train students to become
independent learners

In introductory lectures, I clarify the participants where we hope to be at the end of the course
and how we intend to get there, i adopt top-down approach. Each student has a different way of
learning, some consult text books, some need examples, group discussion is also an effective style
of learning for some students. So I must present the content to cater all the learning styles. I just
don’t focus on multimedia but also facilitate group discussion in class. According to a study,
student learns only 5% of what is heard and 90% by teaching others. At first I evaluate the
students and then carefully organize small groups, assign them group activities. It helps to
develop team sprit as well as good communication skills. In addition to group activates, I also
manage weekly quizzes. These quizzes are designed to develop critical thinking. Further,
individual & group projects are very important and knowledgeable. These projects test each
student’s ability to apply the basic techniques and concepts of course work. I conduct one-one
interaction with students need more attention in their projects.

Using creative teaching methods, prepares students for an ever flourishing electrical engineering
field. For careers in this field of engineering, student will use these skills to create their own ideas.
I want my students to understand, and I want them to create, so that they know that they
understand.
