Primary Sources

Hillstrom, Kevin, et al. Vietnam War: Primary Sources. Detroit, U.X.L., 2001.
This primary source reference book included the story and statement from a man named,
Phuong Hoang, who escaped from Communist Vietnam after the war. This helped me
with my project because it gave me a better understanding of the hardships the
Vietnamese endured after the U.S. withdrawal from the war.

Mason, Andrew. The Vietnam War: A Primary Source History. North American ed., U.S. ed.,
Milwaukee, Gareth Stevens Pub., 2006.
In this primary source book, there are a variety of letters, speeches, and statements from
multiple people who were involved in the Vietnam War. This helped me with my project
because it helped me understand the war on both sides through different perspectives.

Nguyen, Hanh Van. Interview. 6 Feb. 2018.

Richard Nixon. "Address to the Nation on the War in Vietnam," November 3, 1969. Online by
Gerhard Peters and John T. Woolley, The American Presidency Project.
http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=2303.
This primary source speech gave me more insight into President Richard Nixon’s plans
for ending the war in Vietnam. It helped me understand why he chose to gradually
withdraw troops out of Vietnam rather than ending U.S. involvement immediately.

This secondary source book was used to explain how different groups protested and how
people opposed them. This helped me with my topic because this contained many
conflicts that occurred during the United State’s involvement in this war.

This secondary source journal was used to explain past events in Vietnam that occurred
before the war. It helped me understand my topic because it showed me the events that
led up to the war and why it happened.

In this secondary source magazine, it discussed the attacks on South Vietnam by the Viet
Cong and how it affected the South and the United States. It helped me understand my
project because it showed how U.S. involvement in this war was neither a good nor bad
thing.

Schomp, Virginia. The Vietnam War. New York, Benchmark Books, 2004.
This secondary source book was about Vietnamization, the effects of it, what it was, how
it affected the American people, and what it led to. This helped me understand my topic
because Vietnamization was supposed to be a solution but it had flaws like any plan. The
American public had no longer wanted to be involved in this war.

Taylor, Sandra C. "Vietnam War." Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia. Scholastic Grolier Online,
gme.grolier.com/article?assetid=0303600-0. Accessed 1 Sept. 2017.
This secondary source article summarized what the Vietnam War was about and why the
U.S. was involved and what they did to escalate the war. This helped me understand that
the United State’s involvement was to help prevent the spread of communism, which was
a major threat at the time.

This secondary source article was used to describe protests in the United States against
the war, who protested, and why they protested for. This helped me with my project
because the conflict was not only occurring in Vietnam but in the U.S. as well, the
government had to deal with the ongoing war and the protests from the American public.
