TASK 2: Persuasive Speaking: Andy’s speech (in 2 parts) (8 points)

Part 1: New social media sites are starting up almost every week. In fact, the three most

popular sites – Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus – now have over two billion users. That’s

almost 30 percent of the world’s population! Did you know that every day there are over 500

million tweets? I’m sure most of you here enjoy going onto your favorite social media sites and

think they are great. However, my belief is that they are bad for society. I have a lot of reasons,

but let me just offer two now. First, they cause people to waste a lot of valuable time, and

second, social media spreads a lot of false and dangerous information.

Part 2: Let’s first look at how social media wastes time. One report that I read states that

40 % of 8- to 18-year-olds spend at least 64 minutes a day on social media sites.

Furthermore, when people get a message, they take, on average, 25 minutes to return to

their original task, like homework. And in 30 % cases, they take almost two hours. That’s a lot

of time wasted! Now think about all the false information spread. According to researchers at

City University, 49 % of people have heard false news on social media. In addition, 50 % of

students have been victims of cyberbullying. When students use social media to spread false

rumors about others, that clearly makes social media dangerous.
