I. OBJECTIVES
a) To be able to construct and conduct a hydraulic function.
b) To be familiarized with the components of the hydraulic system.
c) To achieve positive control of cylinder from extend and retract
position.

II. INTRODUCTION

Hydraulics is the liquid counterpart of Pneumatics. Hydraulics is a

technology and applied science using engineering, chemistry, and other
sciences. Hydraulics is a mechanical function that operates through the
force of liquid pressure. In Hydraulics- based systems, mechanical
movement is produced by contained, pumped liquid, typically through
cylinders moving pistons. Hydraulic systems are used in modern
production plants and manufacturing installations.

The word Hydraulics originates from the Greek word hydraulikos.

Hydraulikos came from the words “hydor” which means water and “aulos”
which means pipe.

Loading Dock or loading bay is an area of a building where goods

vehicles are loaded and unloaded. They are commonly found on
commercial and industrial building.
III. APPLICATION
A cylinder must fully extend a platform to a loading area. Heavy engine
blocks are to be unloaded at two positions below the loading platform. To
achieve positive control of the cylinder, the intermediate positions must
be hydraulically held.

VI. FUNCTIONS
1. Double Acting Cylinder
- Perform a working movement in both directions.
2. Pressure Relief Valve
- Regulates the pressure of the entire or portion of a hydraulic
system.
3. 4/2 Way Valve
- Controls the direction of flow of the hydraulic fluid and the
positioning of the working components.
4. Shut Off Valve
- Shut offs the supply of the Power Supply to the system.
5. Power Supply Unit
- Gives the necessary hydraulic power by converting the
mechanical power from the drive motor.
6. 4/3 Way Valve
-Controls the direction of flow of the hydraulic fluid and the
positioning of the working components.
7. Non Return Valve
-Blocks the flow in one direction and permit free flow in the other.
VII. PROCEDURE
1. Connect one way flow control valve to the power supply then connect
a hose to be attached to the manifold.
2. Prepare two branch tee and connect it to each other and connect it to
the return hole in the supply.
3. Connect the shut-off valve to the manifold and then attach another
branch tee then insert two hose that will be connected to the 4-3 way
and 4-2 way valve.
4. From the port “A” connect a hose that will then be connected to the
port “A” of the non-return valve.
5. In the non-return valve connect a hose to port “B” then connect it to
the port “A” of the cylinder.
6. From port “X” in the non-retun valve connect it to port “B” of the 4-2
way valve.
7. From port “B” of the 4-3 way valve connect it to port “B” of the
cylinder.
8. Connect port “T” to the branch tee that is connected to the power
supply return port, then connect the other port “T” from the pressure
relief valve back to the branch tee that is also connected to the return
port of the power supply.

IX. EVALUATION
One of the main use of the hydraulic set up is to let the operator
have control in such a way that it requires changing the first switch for the
fluid to return to the power supply. It focuses on one function at a time.

X. CONCLUSION
I can conclude that with the use of the non-return valve it allows
greater control especially in lifting heavy objects such as a platform that
is hydraulically powered, since no fluid can come return to the power
supply without changing the other switch.
