Project Proposal
At my internship at Infinite Biomedical Technologies, my project is to to build a
reliability tester for their upcoming prosthetic controller, Sense. The current reliability tester they
are using is of a non-permanent design- most of the connections are not soldered, it is built on
cardboard, components are loosely attached, and the wires are not color coded. The company is
at slight risk because the current tester could be easily broken. My reliability tester is intended
for the use of IBT; it will allow them to run Sense through multiple trials without the
involvement of a human to produce EMG signals. To do this, it will generate signals and output
them through eight separate channels. Each of these channels will connect to an electrode,
feeding it electrical impulses that mimic human MES. These signals are supplied to Sense. In
order to build the reliability tester, I need to understand many basics of electronics, like the ideas
of voltage, power and ground, resistance, and capacitance. It is important for me to be able to
read schematics in order to build the reliability tester correctly, as I follow schematics to design
the circuitry. I also need to be familiar with the electrical components that are used to build the
tester and how to implement them into my project by soldering. Additionally, I will need to learn
how to use Solidworks, a CAD program, in order to design and 3D print a part that will help
create a reliable connection between electrodes and signal wires. All of the knowledge I need can
be acquired through research, and my mentor will also be available to answer questions for me.
All electrical components that I need to build the tester can be acquired from IBT’s supplies or
ordered online(paid for by IBT). These materials include an Arduino Due, prototyping board,
resistors, capacitors, LEDs, Switches, Buttons, and various wires. As this is an ongoing project, I
have already acquired most needed materials, began to design a part on Solidworks, and
assembled some of the tester.
Timeline
January:
● Complete constructing electrical components of the tester
● Finish initial Solidworks electrode attachment design

February:
● Confirm functionality of electronics by testing the circuits with the arduino
● Make any needed adjustments to electronics
● Print a model of my electrode attachment design and try using it
● Adjust electrode attachment design and print eight copies once the dimensions are
finalized
March
● Assemble the final reliability tester
● Have at least two extra weeks before May 1st for troubleshooting
