Day 1 Meeting Instruction: Meet in the Physiotherapy Department at 8:00 am


Please email the Educators 1 week before the prac commences.

The inpatient rehabilitation unit at St George hospital is in 6 West. Students can


expect to see patients with acute and chronic neurological conditions. These
conditions include
 Stroke
 Traumatic brain injury
 Guillain-Barre syndrome
 Transverse myelitis
 Parkinson’s disease
 Multiple sclerosis
 Other less common conditions (e.g. Huntington’s disease, Motor neurone

Service
Students can also expect to gain experience in the following skills:
 Neurological assessment
 Goal setting
 Treatment planning
 Discharge planning
 Manual handling skills
 Communication and documentation skills
 Implementation of evidence-based practice

By car: Free street parking along Railway parade (near Carlton train station),
along Jubilee avenue (opposite Carlton train station) or across Princes highway.
Walk to hospital takes ~10 to 20 minutes.
Transport
By train: Stop at Kogarah train station. Walk to hospital takes ~10 minutes.

Year 4 Practicum
The Physiotherapy Department is on Level 1, Prince William Wing Building,
corner of Belgrave and Kensington streets. Building entrance is on Belgrave
street (red post box outside the entrance).

All students need to complete hospital online training for OH & S before the
start of clinical. (Please go to link: http://induct.e3learning.com.au). Students
Additional should contact the hospital contact person to obtain more information for the
Information completion of the online training. Please print out the certificate of completion and
bring in a copy on your first day.

Preparation: Please revise assessment and treatment techniques for patient


conditions listed. Common assessments include measurement of neurological
impairments, Timed-Up and Go test (TUG), 10 Metre Walk Test (10MWT), 6
Minute Walk Test, Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Motor Assessment Scale.
All students are expected to abide by the NSW Health Code of Conduct,
ACU Code of Conduct and be dressed appropriately in their
Physiotherapy Polo Shirt, closed black shoes and black pants.
