CHAPTER 1

THE EFFECTS OF TARDINESS OF THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS


OF SOUTHERN LUZON COLLEGE S.Y 2017-2018

INTRODUCTION

Some Senior High School Students of Southern Luzon College come late to

School for some reasons and as a result; academic subject will be affected as well as the

grades, and they will be able to miss classes as it affects their class performance that is

why every Senior High School students should eliminate that habit that can affects on

their performance at School as well as their learning. The purpose of this research is to

know the effects of arriving last in class to some Senior High School Students of

Southern Luzon College. The aim of this research is to determine the effect or what might

happen to the students who always arriving last in class. If being late has a huge impact to

their performance, this research will be conducting a personal interview to those students

who always come late to School and with the help of this, the researchers will be able to

identify the effect of being tardy of some Senior High School Students of Southern Luzon

College.

Based on Rebecca Vukovic, several studies have shown that school tardiness

has a negative impact on the learning of the students, also, according to her, Arriving late

and missing School hours, students receive fewer hours of instruction than students who

are in class when the bell sounds.


This research will gather data or information by doing an Interview to some

students of Senior High School Students of Southern Luzon College, for the researchers

to be able to have an idea on what might happen to some students if they are tardy all the

times. The researcher chose this study because, People know that being tardy all the time

has a huge and negative impact to the students.

This whole study will focus on the effects of tardiness of some Senior High

School Students of Southern Luzon college, the researcher will be conducting a personal

interview to those students who always come late to class.


STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of tardiness of some Senior

High School Students of Southern Luzon College. What impact can affect to their

 Academic performance

 Academic Subject, and to their

 Grades

HYPOTHESIS

After the researcher conduct this study, this study will serve to some

students as an eye opener because they will be able to know the effect of arriving

last in class until they eliminate that bad habit and for the researcher to have a wide

scope to the point of view of students who always come late to class, by the end of

this research some students will have an idea what tardiness can brought to them. If

the researcher will be doing a One on One interview, then the student’s

performance will improve as time passes.


THEORETHICAL FRAMEWORK

A Study by Hamill Institure on Disabilities (Caldarella, Christensen, Young &

Densley, 2011) they found that students who are frequently late to School often miss out

on important opening announcements and early academic activities. As well as to the

teachers, they can become frustrated as late students disrupt instruction, and may tired or

upset of reteaching what the students have missed. And tardy behavior can also

negatively affect the overall classroom environment,

It can affect the classroom ambiance because when they arrive last in class they can

interrupt the flow of a lecture or discussion of teachers, as a result, the students

concentration to the discussion will turn to the student who arrived late in class.

Also, according to Weade lateness could affect students performance and lead to

low grade averages. And the students that have a better attendance and punctuality have

higher grade point averages. While students students with poor attendance and

punctuality have lower grade point averages.

When students come to class late they miss the important information and they

distract other students to miss it too. Nakpodia and Dafiaghor (2011) reported that

lateness or tardiness is not just the problem of the late student, but it affects the

surrounding people. A student coming late in class distracts the rest of the students and

disrupts the flow of the teacher’s discussion.

Scope and Delimitation

This Study will focus on specific variables, specific participants for atleast 100

Senior High School Students of Southern Luzon College. This research will focus

inside Southern Luzon College targeting some Senior High School Students. And

will only tackle the 4 aspects that might affect to the tardiness of the students.

Limitations

The Study, just focused on specific variables, specific particapants, specific

name for the researches to be able to undertand easily the study.

Significance of the study

The importance of this study is that after the researcher concuct the study

students will be able to know and determive the effects of tardiness to their

learning, academic performance, academic subjects, as well as their grade. So that

the teacher and students relationship will be better, there;s no frustration from the

teachers to the students because that bad habit got eliminated.


DEFINITION OF TERMS

Tardiness

- Tardiness is a behaviour of being late, Lateness

students who may be paying attention to the lecture. Literally, the term
“lateness” implies a situation where an individual arrives after the proper,

degrees such as High School and bachelor's degrees represent
academic achievement.
