(CiE) Course Name: Surveying
March 18, 2016 Friday, 10.30 - 12.30 Hrs
Time: 2 Hours, M. Marks: 100 (Weightage:25) Name Of Faculty: Dr. Aditya Parihar
Note: Marks will be deducted for writing answers without proper steps or units,
All questions are compulsory. Assume missing data if required, with reason.

Q.1 Answer the following in brief. Draw figures, if required to explain your point. (04 x 05)
(a) What is working from whole to part and why survey is carried out from
whole to part instead of part to whole?
(b) What are the differences between W.C.B. and Q.B.?
(c) What is contour interval? What are the criterion for selection of
contour interval for a map?
(d) What is orienting a plane table? How is orientation achieved by
backsighting?
Q.2 During the measurement in catenary of a survey line, the following (20)
information was obtained:
Measured length Temp Difference in level between ends Tension
(m) (°C) (m) (N)

was standardized on a flat at 20°C under a pull of 80N. The coefficient of

linear expansion for the material of the tape is 0.000011 1°C and Young's
modulus of elasticity is 20.7 x 104 N/mm2. Determine the absolute length of
survey line.
Q.3 The following bearings were taken in running a compass traverse. At what (25)
stations do you suspect local attraction? Find the correct bearings of the lines
and also compute the included angles.
Line Fore Bearing Back Bearing
AB 124°30' 304°30'
BC 68°15' 246°0'
CD 310°30' 135°15'
DA 200°15' 17°45'
