Plastics present a major threat on the environment. Over 14 million tons of plastics are
dumped into the oceans yearly, killing about 1,000,000 species of aquatic life. Though the
society have come up some solutions of reducing the waste by producing biodegradable
plastics, there is still no conclusive report done to repair the damaged caused by the
aforementioned problem. In the case of recycling waste plastics, pyrolysis of the said material
that are discussed in the studies and journals is one of the effective ways in reusing waste into a
more useful substance. Furthermore, the product of the plastic pyrolysis being discussed by
some journals can solve two problems; fuel shortage and plastic wastes. In addition, the
process for extracting fuel from plastic waste is cheap and reliable. By taking into mind the
financial benefit of the research, it would be a great boon for the country’s economy. The
product of pyrolysis from the journals and research are mostly similar to the properties of the
petrol in the industry. By saying this, one can say that the product of the research will be a
great alternative for fuel in diesel machines and engines.

The production of plastics starts with a distillation process in an oil refinery. The process
involves the separation of heavy crude oil into lighter groups called fractions. Every fraction is a
mixture of hydrocarbon chains which can differ in terms of the structure and the size of their
molecules. Naptha, which is one of the fractions, is the vital element for the production of
plastics. So basically the concept of recycling the waste plastic and turning it into fuel is
rewinding the process of its origin, which is crude oil and making it a combustible material. Thus,
gasoline is formed.

Pyrolysis is the thermal decomposition of long chained hydrocarbon compounds into

smaller ones in absence of oxygen at temperatures depending on the compound’s cracking
point generating gaseous and liquid products. Also, there will be minimal to no physical
impurities on the fuel that will be obtained. If possible, plastic waste pyrolysis being heated at
900 °C will be optimal in attaining more calorific value for the product and thus, more energy
yield and a more efficient fuel. Moreover, heating at the said temperature for treating plastic
waste is deemed to be more securing than that of heated at lower temperatures. The reason
for the fact is to diminish the percentage of compounds that are carcinogenic in the product
yield. The quality and quantity of the product yield will depend on the raw material that will be
used in the process. On one of the studies, 1.5 kg of Grade 5 type of plastic yields 1.65 liters of
oil. On low density polyethylene, the theoretical yield would be 50% that of the weight of the
raw material before the process has begun.
