Introduction:

From its beginning as a small city with a few thousand people, Dhaka actually
experienced dramatic turns upward and today it has become one of the fastest
growing mega cities of the world. Its existence as a major urban agglomeration
has been consistent over a period of 400 years. Even the most developed cities in
the world today cannot boast 400 years of uninterrupted and organized existence
that Dhaka does as a historic city.To convert a mega city,Dhaka City Corporation
plays an important role.Basically they maintain housing, transportation, sanitation,
utilities, land use, and communication. They consist 5 zones, today we visited zone
2 placed in Mirpur.

Today we strongly fouced on Quality Control of concrete, brick, cement

,aggregate,reinforcement etc.

Quality control of concrete.

- Unsufficient maintainence
- Proper check of the materials
- Lack of experience

Quality control of brick.

Properties of 1st class brick:

- Uniform colour.
- Uniform in texture,hard & crackles.
- Water absorption <= 14%
- Metalic sound
- Wt 1100 kg/m^3
Properties of Cement.

Initial setting time >= 45 min

Final setting time >= 8 hr

- Check the compressive strength respectively 3,7 & 28 days.

- Using admixture to increase the settling time.

Quality control of Aggregate.

Two types of aggregates like coarse aggregate and fine aggregate. The

aggregate which retained in No.04 sieve is called coarse aggregate otherwise called
fine aggregate. To maintain good strength, we observe S – curve very carefully. We
use stone chips, brick chips etc in aggregate.

Stone Chips. Brick chips

Unit wt (kg/m^3) : 1570 1100

Water Absorption : 9% 14%

LAA : 30% 40%

Factors Affecting Workability.

- W/C ratio
- Amount and type of aggregate
- Weather
- Chemical admixtures
- Aggregate ratio

Production of concrete.
1. Batching
2. Mixing
3.Conveying
4.Handling and placing
5.Compacting
6.Finishing
7.Curing

Conclusion.

Quality control and safety represent increasingly important concerns for project
managers. Defects or failures in constructed facilities can result in very large costs.
Even with minor defects, re-construction may be required and facility operations
impaired. Increased costs and delays are the result. In the worst case, failures may
cause personal injuries or fatalities. Indirect costs of insurance, inspection and
regulation are increasing rapidly due to these increased direct costs. Good project
managers try to ensure that the job is done right the first time and that no major
accidents occur on the project. As a potential Final Year student like us it was a
very fruitful introductory session. We are interested and likely to learn the
diversified arenas of Civil Engineering applications in coming days.
