Ultrasonic phased arrays are a novel technique for generating, receiving and imaging ultrasound.
Instead of a single transducer and beam, phased arrays use multiple ultrasonic elements and
Phased Array electronic time delays to create beams by constructive and destructive interference. As such,
phased arrays offer significant technical advantages for weld testing and plant monitoring over
conventional ultrasonic as the phased array beams can be steered, scanned, swept and focused
electronically from a fixed probe position. Beam steering permits the selected beam angles to be
optimized ultrasonically by orienting or focussing them perpendicular to the predicted discontinuities,
for example lack of fusion in automated weld inspections.
Phased arrays allow real-time control of three important ultrasonic probe parameters

TOFD and its principles are well documented. Utilizing diffracted energy in the detection of flaws,
the technique is less reliant on flaw orientation and morphology than standard pulse echo
techniques, leading to improved sizing and probability of defect detection (POD). Additionally,
computerized electronic data capture and storage, in conjunction with scanning manipulators
enable rapid scanning speeds to be achieved TOFD has now been accepted as an alternative to
Radiography in Pre-Service Inspections with standards such as ASME Section V Appendix III ,
and its use in pipe weld and thick walled pressure vessel fabrication is now common place.
Due to it’s sensitivity and sizing accuracy, TOFD is also an excellent tool for in-service material
and flaw monitoring. Engineers who are monitoring root erosion, stress corrosion cracking, vessel
cladding, Hydrogen Attack, Weld and Steam Chest cracks for example, are all now utilizing TOFD
as part of an ongoing inspection regime.

Non Destructive Testing is integral to plant life assessment tasks, providing raw data to the
fracture mechanics sciences.
Advances in computer based NDT techniques in recent years have enabled improved efficiency
of inspections and greater accuracy in defect detection, sizing, and monitoring.
Integrity NDT can advise on appropriate specialised techniques, and will resource and coordinate
these activities.
We also provide specific NDT solutions to engineers, coupled with NDT procedure production and
validation/qualification through our Level 3 Consultancy Service.
Features:
Cost & time savings through efficient NDT management and planning.
Experienced engineers…’high integrity service’.
Ensure ‘value for money’ from specialist NDT.
Coordinate plant assessment cost effectively.
Integrity NDT Ltd have designed and built their ‘I-Scan’ scanners…simple to use and versatile
single axis semi-automated Phased Array Scanner and TOFD Scanner.
The ‘I-Scan’ package is an amazingly versatile modular system, with the tools to create many
different scanners for many applications in one handy box…from small diameter pipework to large
vessels or plate, the modular system can be adapted to suit.
I-Scanners have been developed for our own site use, from experience of carrying out automated
and semi-automated ultrasonic inspections…featuring multiple easy slide spring loaded probe
holders, integral positional encoders, super-strength magnetic wheels, and positional guide track
option, the ‘I-Scan’ incorporates functionality found on much more expensive scanner systems at
a fraction of the cost.
The I-Scan is a cost effective alternative to hand held manual probe manipulators and expensive
semi or fully automated inspection systems.
METALLURGICAL INSPECTON
SERVICES
This form of non-destructive testing is used to establish cause and/or extent of damage and/or
ageing mechanisms in metallic structures from micrographs of grain structure, and is often
implemented alongside primary NDT activities. Metallurgical Microstructure Replicas can provide
important defect assessment (cause/growth) or remnant life data to engineers responsible for
plant management.
Replication is designated by ASTM E 1351 as the Standard Practice for Production and
Evaluation of Field Metallographic Replicas and the procedure is performed by engineers and
trained technicians using portable polishing equipment following modified laboratory procedures
for the preparation of metallographic samples.
Integrity Engineering has a very experienced team that have a diverse knowledge of the different
materials associated with supporting projects in the Power; Petrochemical; Pharmaceutical and
Chemical sectors globally. We understand the importance of preplanning and educating our
clients on site requirements with regards to the use of chemicals, grinding, polishing and often

procedures for the safe performance of this inspection technique.
Non Destructive Testing is a key function of QA/QC on new build or in-service outage, 'turn-
around', and shutdown activities, and is called upon by insurance and statutory regulations as a
requisite for plant integrity assurance.
The planning and management of inspection activities, combined with a professional NDT support
service, helps to minimise the intrusion of inspection activities on an outage or turnaround „strip &
re-build‟ programme, while ensuring all work is carried out and reported efficiently, to the relevant
standards.
Integrity NDT personnel have over 35 years of experience in planning, managing and carrying out
NDT on all aspects of power and process plant both in the UK and overseas. In addition to ad-hoc
consultancy, we currently provide this service annually to three Combined Cycle Gas Turbine
power plants owned in part or whole by International Power around the globe.
Utilising “QUARTZSite” our bespoke inspection management software tool (see software)…from
planning stages, through to the provision of professional „electronic‟ inspection and summary
Plan reports at close out, Integrity NDT can help to ensure that NDT is not only cost effective and
Management efficient, but also makes a significant contribution to plant integrity and asset management.

· Electronic inspection and summary reports.
· QUARTZSite Software.
· Cost & time savings through efficient NDT management and planning.
· Experienced engineers…‟high integrity service‟.
· Minimise intrusion with other engineering activities.
· Create consolidated electronic plant inspection records, benefiting asset management.
This software has been developed to assist engineers in the efficient planning and maintenance
of inspection records over the lifetime of a plant / pipe system.
The efficient planning of inspections and the maintenance of inspection records over the lifetime
of industrial plant and particularly pipe systems is reliant on detailed system drawings, with unique
identification assigned to critical items such as welds, hangers, and bends on pipes for example…
From available plant drawings and site surveys, Quartz links scaled 3D CAD pipework modelling,
through ‘live’ on screen tags, to a bespoke database of inspection records and a document
management system with the ability to attach original documentation or image files via url or
stand-alone.
Benefits:
Integrity NDT has qualified personnel accredited by Industrial Rope Access Trade Association
(IRATA).
Rope access is not Integrity NDT core business today, but instead a method of access to perform an
inspection, engineering or maintenance task. Integrity NDT currently provide inspection and rope
access services to a wide variety of clients at various offshore and onshore locations.
Access provision can be a significant proportion of projects costs. Rope Access techniques can
replace traditional scaffold or platform solutions and offer clients significant savings.
A single point of contact for access and inspection teams - the client can realise project co-
ordination and time efficiencies as Integrity NDT provide and manage both services.
Rope systems are quick to install and dismantle. By removing operational and time constraints,
rope access services are often able to reduce the time window required to undertake work.
R o p e Ac c e s s
Solutions Rope access is statistically safer than scaffolding, and the use of IRATA qualified technicians
and procedures further benefits project health and safety.
The CreepImage project will develop a digital image technique for long term
measurement and monitoring of creep deformation of an engineering
structure/component under harsh conditions (high temperature, irradiation etc.) where
EU “FP7 direct sensor attachment and human access are difficult or dangerous. A high definition
Creep Image” digital camera equipped with a suitable lens (macro, telescopic or telecentric lens) will
Research & be used to capture speckle plate images of a grid on the component surface at various
Development stages, and digital image correlation (DIC) will be used to calculate the deformation
Project associated with creep behaviour of the component.
The procedure is expected to be as follows: (1) Physically produce a speckle plate grid
on the surface of the structure. It serves as the information carrier from which
deformation can be calculated by DIC. (2) Capture digital images of the grid at different
stages. A reference plate with a stable known coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE)
will be placed adjacent to the grid such that it can be imaged simultaneously. This
permits automatic calibration without the need to keep the camera on site all the time.
(3) DIC software will be used to calculate the overall deformation. Creep strain is
obtained by subtracting the thermal deformation.
The project work will be a laboratory based demonstration to validate the proposed
techniques and to investigate the measurement capability (accuracy, repeatability etc.).
In addition, site trials on power plant and other potential application areas include
evaporators in a power plant.
