GEOGRAPHY TEACHING

NEWSLETTER FOR THE AUTUMN 2010

Welcome back to the new academic year and the return of the newsletter. First of
all thank you to all the geography educators who supported each other over the
last year. The highlight was the secondary geography teacher’s conference at
UWE. Although number were down on the previous year, it was great to see so
many teachers from Bristol schools. We are in the process of trying to get
Michael Palin as the key note speaker for next year!! The success of the network
in the Bristol region is down to the fantastic links, commitment and hard work
between schools, local universities and The Geographical Assocation, long may
the mutual support continue. Below are events and dates for 2010 -2011. Please
put them into your diary and make every effort to attend.

South Gloucestershire Secondary Geography Best Practice meetings

Friday 1st October 2010. Secondary Geography Best Practice meeting. 9.00
-12.30 meeting then Alan Parkinson Secondary Curriculum Development Leader
for the Geographical Association. 1.30 -3.30. Abbey Wood Community School
(Old Filton High School)
Friday 4th February 2011 9.00 - 4.00. South Gloucestershire Secondary
Geography Best Practice. Bradley Stoke Community School.
Wednesday 6th July 2011 Secondary Geography Best Practice Conference at
UWE.
These meetings are free to attend for teachers in South Gloucestershire schools.
However there is a small charge for non South Gloucestershire schools to attend.
On Friday 1st October 2010 we have arranged for Alan Parkinson to run a
twilight session from 3.45 until 5.00 for those schools who cannot make the day
sessions. Do remember that you can attend the Secondary Geography Best
Practice meetings for half a day or if you want to share the day with a colleague.
Just let Garry know at garry.atterton@thecastleschool.org.uk which session you
intend to go to.

Tony, Ben and Garry are now supporting Primary Geography teachers in South
Gloucestershire and have arranged the following meetings:

Friday 5th November 2010 9.00 -12.00 Primary Geography Best Practice meeting

Friday 4th March 2011 1.15 -3.30. Primary Geography Best Practice meeting.
Severnside Filton.
Friday 11th May 2011 1.15 -3.30. Primary Geography Best Practice meeting.
Fieldwork at Blaise Castle.

Links are being made with Sarah Whitehouse the Primary lecturer in Geography
at UWE and further links have been made with the Geographical Association and
the Primary Champions scheme. If any Primary teachers would like support

Bristol branch Geographical Association events

As always there is a fantastic range of opportunities for students and teachers
through your local GA branch. See below for list of events and the website

Please contact chris.spencer@uwe.ac.uk for membership details. It’s very cheap
to join. Hazel Barrett is a fantastic speaker, very knowledgeable and very
passionate about her specialism of global population and health issues. Note
there are two sixth form events in the autumn term. Please let Garry know if your
students intend to come to go to The Castle School or Chris Spencer know if you
intend to go to the Bath meeting. The topics and speakers will be the same at
both sessions. Many thanks to the UWE geography staff for supporting this
programme.

Thursday 7th October. GA lecture at the University of Bristol Dr Wendy

Woodland. UWE. The Cascadia fault zone and hazards. Looking at issues of
prediction and mitigation. Including input from UWE geography undergraduates,
who have recently returned from an Iceland expedition.

Tuesday 9th November. 5.00 -7.30 GA GCSE WorldWise Quiz at Redmaids

School.

Tuesday 16th November. A joint GA/RGS lecture at the University of Bristol Jacki
Hill-Murphy, expedition film maker. Mary Kingsley: A remarkable Victorian
explorer and an account of the re enactment of her climb up Mount Cameroon in
1895.

Wednesday 17th November 1.30 - 4.00. South Gloucestershire sixth form

conference at The Castle School Thornbury.

Wednesday 24th November. GA lecture at the University of Bristol. Dr Jenny Hill.

UWE. 'Conserving tropical forest: from ecological preservation to ecotourism'.
Thursday 25th November 1.30-4.00. Bath sixth form Geography conference.

Wednesday 9th February 1.30 - 4.00. GA 6th form Geography conference at the
University of Bristol. Climate Change. What and where is it happening?
Including Chris Parker from UWE with Climate Change and river management.

Tuesday 1st March 6.00 -9.00. GA 6th form competition. Climate Change what
and where is it happening?
