Lección 5: Cuando era adolescente... - Gramática: Extra grammar practice: Past tenses
and conditional forms
Aquí Tienes Un Consejo
This unit gives you the chance to practise some of the grammar that you've learned, by using lots of repetition, until you feel fully
confident in remembering and using it. In this unit we're going to focus on the topics listed below.

Past simple

Past continuous

Present perfect

1st and 2nd conditional

Do you remember? We use the past simple tense to talk about completed actions in the past. To form the past simple with regular
verbs, we add the ending -ed. If the regular verb already ends in 'e', we just add -d. If the regular ends in 'y', remove it and add -ied.

I watched a great drama on TV last week.

The student asked a question.

He cooked a lovely meal last night.

We lived in Spain for two years.

She moved to London last year.

You closed the shop after two years.

I studied law at university.

She replied to my email.

We tried to get a ticket for the concert.

to catch caught

to speak spoke

to drink drank

to say said

to get got

to make made

to come came

to see saw

to think thought

to take took

to find found

For negative sentences and questions, we use the word "did" and the infinitive form of the verb.

I didn't go to the shop yesterday.

Did you meet with your friend last weekend?

Do you remember? We use the past continuous tense to describe temporary actions that were in progress in the past. It uses the
past simple form of the verb "to be" followed by the -ing form of the main verb.

I was cooking dinner.

She was speaking to you.

We were thinking about moving house.

You were doing your homework.

Do you remember? We can use the present perfect for: 1) talking about past actions with a connection / impact on the present; 2)
talking about things that started in the past and continue into the present; 3) past experiences that we link with the present. Here are
some examples:

1) I haven't finished my essay.

2) We've lived in France for 2 years.

3) Have you ever been to South America?

to speak spoken

to come come

to see seen

to take taken

We need some of these past tenses and some other tenses to form conditional sentences. The first conditional talks about possible
situations in the future; the second conditional talks about hypothetical situations in the present / future.

If you eat more healthily, you'll lose some weight.

He wouldn't be so tired if he didn't work such long hours.

The first conditional uses the present simple and the future simple. The second conditional uses the past simple or the past
continuous and "would + verb".

First conditional: If you don't like raspberries, you won't like the dessert.

Second conditional: If I did more exercise, I would be healthier.

Now for some more repetition! In this section, you'll see a mix of everything we've revised in this unit. You'll need to structure
sentences for yourself and combine your knowledge to become an expert in past tenses and conditional forms! Ready? Go!
