Part A
Each question carries 2 marks
1. Write any FOUR applications of electronics in the field of communication.
2. For the samples given below, specify the nominal value, tolerance, maximum to
minimum value.
a) A resistor coloured gray, red, orange, gold.
b) A capacitor numbered 2M2
3. Differentiate active and passive components. Name at least 2 in each category.
4. Explain how a potential barrier is created in an open circuited PN junction diode?
5. Differentiate between intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductor with examples.
6. Explain the working principle of inductor?
7. Explain the concept of contactor? Give its applications.
8. Derive the relationship between α and β.
9. Draw the symbol of the following: a) Zener diode b) PNP
10. Write the diode current equation and specify each term in it.

11. a) Discuss the construction & operation of an electromechanical relay.


b) With a neat figure, explain the construction of a carbon film resistor and mention its
features.

b) Explain the basic working principle of transformer? List 4 different types of
transformers and its application.

13. a) Differentiate between the working principle of photodiode and LED with figures.
b) Compare the three transistor configurations. Write the application of each.

14. a) Explain with diagram and equations, the operation of NPN transistor.
b) Explain the working of PN junction diode in forward and reverse biased condition.
Plot the V-I characteristics for the same.
