CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON

VERSE 15.1:-

 Desire is the cause of things' being

situated in this reflected material light.
 The fifteenth chapter states that detachment
is the cause of cessation of birth, that the
soul is an aàça of the Lord, and that Kåñëa
is superior to matter and the jéva.
 according to the viewpoint of bhakti, açvaù
means that which will not last till tomorrow
(a= not, çvaù= tomorrow). Açvattha therefore
means that which is bound to perish.
 Vedas they expand the bondage of the
material world, they are called the leaves
(parnäëi).
 ürdhva-mülo’väk-çäkha eño’ çvatthaù
sanätanaù
 This eternal açvattha tree has its root is
upwards and branches downwards. Kaöha
Upaniñad 2.3.1
 The statements of the çruti which propound
performance of kämya karma (chandäàsi) are
called the leaves of the tree of saàsära,
because the verses increase the very cause
of saàsära—the väsanäs or impressions (as
the leaves nourish the tree).
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
 One who knows how to cut down this tree of
saàsära is called a knower of the meaning of
the Vedas.
CCP:-

 In this chapter lord establishes how the

jnana culminates in the bhakti ultimately.
 In the 14th chapter it was established that
the bhagavan is the ultimate reality, now
here is the further elaboration.
 In this chapter there is the essence of the
Vedanta three sloki BG.
 Leaves are the verses of the Vedas but lord
says knowing the leaves/verses only are not
sufficient but one should know the complete
tree.
 Material existence is the existence of the
soul in the matter as the matter always
exists.
 We see the upside down tree in the
reflection only so it indicate that our
world is the reflection of the eternal world
which is eternal.
 Ashwatah = 1) that which will not lost –
that the beautiful material object are not
permanent so we should be attached to
them.2) horse – this world is the ekapda
vibhutis, and the spiritual world is the
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
tripad vibhutis, as the horse has the habit
of standing on the three legs.
 Desire is the cause of the existence, which
misdirected away from the Krishna to enjoy
separately.
VERSE 15.2:-

 The impressions are said to be roots because

they are causes of man’s tendency to act
according to dharma or adharma.

CCP:-

 Branches going up and down represent the

jive moving up and down in the material
world as per the karma.
 This tree is nourished by the modes this is
the connection with the last chapter.
 Root also refers to the where things begin,
 Roots of all our action are the desire.
 All living being are under the control of
the lord but the law of karma doesn’t apply
equally to all the species.
 Bondage is created in the human
society, animals are not under the law of the
karma and the devatas have the greater
freedom than the human beings.
VERSE 15.3, 4:-
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
 because the attachment for sense enjoyment
and lording it over the material nature is
very strong. Therefore one must learn
detachment by discussion of spiritual
science based on authoritative scriptures,
and one must hear from persons who are
actually in knowledge.
 He is the cause of the extension of the
material world. This has already been
explained by the Lord Himself. Ahaà sarvasya
prabhavaù: [Purport. 10.8] "I am the origin
of everything."
 Saìga means desire for sense objects, and
asaìga means the opposite, detachment from
sense objects. This is the weapon, because
it can destroy the desires.
 The method of searching and attaining is
hearing and other processes, along with
surrender.
CCP:-

 In the material world the main thing is not

to figure out but ot get out.
 Krishna is saying don’t try to understand
this world but try to come out of it.
 Asanga detachment is not easy to develop but
by the determination one can develop.
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
 Develop the detachment is only the half part
then one has to surrender to the lord from
whom the whole world is manifested.
 We cannot end the material existence but we
can end our existence in the material world.
 Greater the bodily identification greater
will be the suffering in the material world.
 Mayavadi concept is that use the ista devata
deity to attain the Brahman but then discard
the deity, but Krishna here is teling that
you have to surrender to that person.
 Krishna is here referring to himself in the
3rd person.
 Two possibilities become detached from the
world then surrender to the Krishna or
surrender to the Krishna then automatically
become detached.
 By the surrender to the vasudeva the jnana
and the detachment automatically develops it
is not dependent on the intelligence but on
the surrender and the receptivity of the
heart.
VERSE 15.5:-

 For one who is always expecting some honor

in this material world, it is not possible
to surrender to the Supreme Person.

CCP:-
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
 Vritti means inclination and nivritti means
giving up the inclination.
 Vinivritta Kama means giving up the desire
for the material enjoyment.
 We need to be strong enough to admit that we
are not strong enough.
 We can go beyond the waves of the material
existence by anchoring ourselves which is
beyond the material existence.
 To admit the weakness a person need to be
strong.
 We cannot stay artificially in some mask,
unless internally sheltered.
 Isolated self confidence without the
guidance of the authority can be dangerous.
 Here moha is not the tamasik illusion but
the identification with the body.
 One has to know what is our own and what is
not our own, our connection, bhakti is our
own.
 Connection with the Krishna is the most
precious property other property will come
and go but this property will stay with us.
 Duality is caused by the hope of pleasure
and the fear of the suffering.
LINK;- Krishna will talk in the 1st person
VERSE 15.6:-
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
 One cannot become detached from the
attraction of the material world simply by
dressing himself in saffron cloth. He must
become attached to the devotional service of
the Lord. Therefore one should take it very
seriously that devotional service as
described in the Twelfth Chapter is the only
way to get out of this false representation
of the real tree.
 Dhäma can mean light, place and form.
tat paraà paramaà brahma sarvaà vibhajate
jagat
mamaiva tad ghanaà tejo jïätum arhasi bhärata

 That supreme Brahman lights up this whole

universe. You should know that this intense
light belongs to Me, O Bhärata. Hari Vaàça
2.114.12
na tatra süryo bhäti na candra-tärakaà
nemä vidyuto bhänti kuto’yam agniù
tam eva bhäntam anubhäti sarvaà
tasya bhäsä sarvam idaà vibhäti

 The sun does not shine there, nor do the

moon or stars. Nor does lightning shine.
How, then, can fire burn? When He shines,
all of these shine. Through His light, all
things shine. Kaöha Upaniñad 2.2.15
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
CCP:-

 Moon in the spiritual world is simply for

the setting the scene for the pastime but
they are not required in the spiritual
world.
 Use of the word electricity by the Prabhupad
is for conveying the point no need to do
split hair analysis.
 Vedic literature are translated with the
precision and the relevance in the mind, only
precision but if not relevant to the people
then it is missing the point,Prabhupad knew
that people will not have the tendency to
read all so he gave the conclusion in every
verse.
 Alternate meaning that which is invisible,
inconceivable and indescribable that is my
abode.
 By hearing about something attractive we
develop the desire to go there.

 Spiritual advancement is not the matter of
the dress but the matter of the heart.
VERSE 15.7:-

 The fragmental portion of the Supreme Lord

is not like some material broken part. We
have already understood in the Second
Chapter that the spirit cannot be cut into
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
pieces. This fragment is not materially
conceived. It is not like matter, which can
be cut into pieces and joined together
again. That conception is not applicable
here, because the Sanskrit word sanätana
("eternal") is used. The fragmental portion
is eternal.
sväàçaç cätha vibhinnäàça iti dvedhäyam iñyate
vibhinnäàças tu jévaù syät

 There are two types of aàça of the Lord, the

sväàça and vibhinnäàça. The vibhinnäàça is
the jéva.( varaha purana).
CCP:-

 1-6 attain liberation by detachment.

 7-11 if doesn’t attain liberation then one
has to stay in the material world bound.
 Living entity is eternally part of the
Krishna; it will not merge as the word used
is sanatanah.
 Here lord is saying that the living entities
are his eternal part not the pat of the
Brahman.
 1st part of the verse is the very strong
refutation of the mayavada.
 This verse talks about how the living entity
is struggling here.
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
 Generally in the BG the mind is grouped with
the other senses.
 Most people thing that the senses are the
sources of the happiness, but here lord is
saying that the they are the sources of the
suffering, suffering of the jiva are self
sentenced.
 Both the jiva and the different incarnation
are eternal.
 False ego binds the soul with the matter.
 False ego rivets the consciousness to the
matter.
 Analogy is the comparison and the allegory
is the elaborate explanation.
 Mind is like the multimedia computers that
collects the inputs and display.
 Mind drives by providing the object on the
screen which is enjoyable.
 Activities of the mind in any mode are the
sources of the misery in some it may be less
and in other it may be more.
 In the spiritual world there is ultimate
exchange between the jiva and the lord.
 We are eternally the part and parcel of the
Krishna but when we get separated then we
suffer.
 Be a part but not apart.
 Suffering in this world is inevitable which
is created by ouor karma.
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
LINK:- what is that karsati is explained in this
verse.
VERSE 15.8:-
CCP:-

 As the wind acquires the different odor in

different places, the soul acquires the
different
 Goodness wants to be happy with others,
passion I want to be happy doesn’t care for
the happiness of others, ignorance want to
be happy and other suffer.
 We may go through the suffering physically
but we have the choice to go through it
emotionally or not.
 Emphasis of this verse is that the soul gets
affected by the situation or surroundings.
 We are shaped by our experience, but this is
not deterministic.
 We should choose our surroundings that bring
out our higher side not the lower side.
 Body is the trap of the ignorance; senses
are leading to the destruction.
 Ishvara is used as the soul can choose the
body by developing the corresponding
conception.
 Karsati- going from one body to another and
while being in one body suffering there.
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
VERSE 15.9:-
CCP:-

 Soul serves the sense objects in the

association of the senses.
 Input from all the senses comes to the mind,
which is like computer display; all the
sources of the sensory input are integrated
by the mind, and then give the integrated
picture.
 Integration problem- in the neurology they
don’t know how does the integrated picture
is developed, as different sensory input
from the senses go to the different areas in
the brain, but the final result is the
integrated, although not the all the areas
in the brain are connected with all the
other areas, so the final result is produces
in the mind in subtle way.
 Sound and the sight are different input and
their input happens at different place they
are integrated in the mind and then the
final result is presented to the soul for
the final action.
VERSE 15.10:-
CCP:-

 Here the second time the word jnana caksu is

used in the BG.
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
 Ex- the drinker may think that he is
drinking but the wise understand that he is
shackled by the addiction.
 One suffers the happiness and also the
misery.
LINK:- how to acquire that jnana caksu and what
is the difference between the Mudha and the
wise.
VERSE 15.11:-
CCP:-

 7-11 if not detached one goes in the cycle

of birth and death.
 Why some have the jnana caksu and others do
not have is answered here.
 Because of misdirected consciousness one
cannot perceive.
 Not just the desire and Endeavour are
sufficient to get the jnana caksu but one
should situate himself on the
transformation.
 Only endeavor is not everything.
 We can perceive and persue,1st is hearing
which makes one aware of the higher reality.
 If we don’t want our consciousness to be
carried away the we should not be kid- have
to be serious, not taking up and leaving, no
question of feeling or not feeling. We
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
should not be ruled by our emotions but
should rule the emotions. Nap- we should be
lazy, there need the constant endeavor,
either we feel high or low, steady endeavor
is required. We should not be kidnapped.
 Acting at the bodily level means getting
carried by the bodily desires; if the bodily
desires take away the consciousness then we
will be acetsah.
 Acetasah means the person is not conscious
of what he should be.
 Endeavor should be guided.
LINK:- how krishna assists us in our material
existence and the spiritual endeavor.(if the
person is on the bodily level how he can
progress- such person can perceive the Krishna’s
mercy in our material life)
Cosmologically.
VERSE 15.12:-

 Moonshine is so pleasing that people can

easily understand that they are living by
the mercy of the Supreme Personality of
Godhead, Kåñëa.
CCP:-

 Get jnana by perceiving the higher

arrangement in our material life.
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
 Krishna arranging for our existence at the
material level.
 These three suns, moon and the fire are the
sources of the nutrition in the material
world.
 Modern science can explain the mechanical
process by which the light is coming from
the sun but they can’t explain who has
started the process, there explanation is
partial.
 Animal don’t question why if humans just
enjoy the sunlight and enquire about the
presence of the sun and just enjoy the sun
light then they are like animals.
 Theism- god is the controller and the
creator.
 Deism- god is the creator but not the
controller; here idea is that the universe
is like the clock once set up then functions
by the set up mechanism. But everything
doesn’t happen by the mechanism as the
Krishna tells maya adhyaksena prakriti.
 Atheism- god is both the creator and the
controller.
 Pascal –little understanding of the science
can make one atheist but the deep immersion
in the science make one believe in the god.
LINK:- at the terrestrial level.
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
VERSE 15.13:-

 When the spirit soul is there, a living man

can float on the water, but when the living
spark is out of the body and the body is
dead, the body sinks.
 Similarly, all these planets are floating in
space, and this is due to the entrance of
the supreme energy of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead. His energy is
sustaining each planet, just like a handful
of dust.
 The sacred text says yena dyaur ugrä påthivé
ca dåòhä: by whom the heavens, and powerful
earth are made firm. (Åk Veda 8.7.3.1)
CCP:-

 All the laws of material nature are acting

by the will of the Krishna so also the law
of gravity.
 Scientific explanation is like mentioning in
words what is happening automatically in the
nature but no one tells what is the source
of this gravity, who maintains it.
 There is just the piling of the inference no
one tells the root, that is holding all.
 Trying to explain everything at the
material level without considering the
ultimate reality will not be able to explain
everything correctly.
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
 Matter is heavy the soul makes the matter
light and move around.
 After the death the body becomes heavy due
to soul leaving the body.
 Scientific research is never complete what
is taken today as the dead rock rule may be
rejected tomorrow as outdated.
 Explanation in the science may be correct in
the limited sense but they may not be
correct in the ultimate sense.
 We focus on the sabda not on the empirical
research if it helps to understand then we
use it else sabda is the authority.
LINK;- how krishna arranges for us at the
physiological level.
VERSE 15.14:-

 The four types of food are: chewed with the

teeth (bhakñya), like roasted chick peas;
savored by the tongue without using the
teeth (bhojya) such as soup; licked (lehya)
such as raw sugar; and sucked items (coñya),
in which the chewed portion is discarded,
such as sugar cane stick.
 The çåuti says ayam agnir vaiçvänaro yo’yam
antaù puruñe yenedaà annaà pacyate: the Lord
is the fire of digestion which is within man
and by which food is digested. (Båhad
Äraëyaka Upaniñad 5.9)
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
 çabdädibhyo’ntaù pratiñöhänäc ca: if there
be objection that the fire of digestion is
not Viñëu, because of opposing statements
and His residing in the human body, the
answer is that the fire is Viñëu, because
meditation on Visnu is taught. (Vedänta
Sütras 1.2.27)
 The four types of food are those which are
chewed (bhakñyam), sipped (bhojyam), licked
(lehyam) and sucked (cüñyam). Bhakñya means
that which is chewed with the teeth, such as
chick peas or bread. It is also called
carvyam. Sipped items are such thing as soup
and porridge. Licked items are such things
as milk rice, raw sugar and honey. Sucked
items are such things as ripe amalaki and
sugar cane. When the Lord says He becomes
the moon and the fire of digestion, that He
is not different from them, it should be
understood that He does so by His power of
pervasion.
CCP:-

 Our body is sheltered by the Krishna not by

us, we inhabit the body.
 Digestion happens involuntarily.
 Digestion is such a complex project that the
scientist discovered that the to digest as
in body they will need several kilometer
long factory.
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
 More we remember that how Krishna is
maintaining us through the practical
experience that much we will turn close to
him.
 We should recognize that it is Krishna who
is maintaining the body at all time, if we
remember this more we will be grateful to
Krishna.
 Krishna is making all arrangement for us
materially and also for the spiritual
advancement.
 Even for enjoying the sense objects they are
made beautiful by the Krishna.
LINK ;- how Krishna arranges for liberation.
VERSE 15.15:-

 antaù-praviñöaù çästä janänäm: He has

entered within as the controller of all
people. (Taittiréya Äraëyaka 3.11)
 Uddhava says: tvatto jïänaà hi jévänäà
pramoñas tatra çaktitaù: from You alone the
knowledge of the living beings arises, and
by Your potency that knowledge is stolen
away. (SB 11.22.28)
 yo’sau sarvair vedair géyate: It is He who
is praised by all the Vedas. (Gopäla Täpané
Upaniñad) I am to be known indirectly
through karma käëòa portion of the Vedas and
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
directly through the jïäna käëòa portion of
the Vedas.
 ta tu samanvayät: Viñëu is the subject of
the Vedas because that is the meaning of all
Vedic texts. (Vedänta Sütras 1.1.4)”

CCP:-

 Two parts of the verse Krishna’s presence in

the heart and his actions and his connection
with the Vedas.
 Here focus is that how he acts internally.
 Krishna acts as the chaitya guru from inside
and he only acts as the instructing guru
from externally.
 This jnana is meant to increase our
attraction for the Krishna.
 When maya gives temptation we forget all the
instruction of the guru sadhu and sastra but
in this forgetfulness Krishna is responsive
and we are responsible, we need to choose
the right response then Krishna will respond
accordingly.
 When the material desires come we entertain
them, contemplate on them when Krishna sees
this then he responds accordingly.
 Krishna is reciprocal we cannot hold him
responsible for our choices.
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
 If the soul seriously desires Krishna then
Krishna will give remembrance of him and the
forgetfulness of himself.
 We should not be forgetful of our
forgetfulness. Should constantly strive to
bring the mind back on track.
 With the steady practice we will forget the
strongest of the cravings for the material
enjoyments.
 Krishna gives the knowledge externally
through the Vedas, although the Vedas give
the vast knowledge it directs towards the
Krishna the goal of all Vedic knowledge is
Krishna.
 Krishna is the goal, compiler and the knower
of the Vedas.
 Krishna gives the knowledge internally
remembrance and forgetfulllnes and
externally he gives the knowledge through
the Vedas.
 Krishna mercifully created the all
arrangement for us in this world to live but
his ultimate arrangement is that he created
the ways to get out of the birth, death and
disease.
 Krishna gives the guidance to the soul for
how to live in the particular body when the
soul changes the body.
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
 Different things in the scriptures are in
the hierarchy and at the top is the
knowledge of the Krishna.

 The knowers of Brahman know this as akñara,

O Gärgé. Båhad Äraëyaka Upaniñad 3.8.3
akñaraà brahma paramam

 The akñara is the supreme Brahman. BG 8.3

 From these quotations, it is seen that the
word akñara means Brahman.
 Amara Koça says “That is kuöa-sthaù which is
situated over all time with one form.”
CCP:-

 Kutashta-oneness, oneness in terms of the

quality.
 Oneness is not the dissolution of the
individuality but the resolution of the
identity.
VERSE 15.17:-

 This position of supporting and protecting

the universe cannot refer to the conditioned
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
jéva because he cannot perform such actions.
It cannot refer to the liberated jéva
because he is devoid of interaction with the
world.
CCP:-

 Krishna is building up the message of the

Vedanta.
 In ht everse 13 krishan said that he enters
in the planets and supports them and here he
is saying that paramatma is the maintainer
so the Krishna and the paramatma is the
same, he doesn’t give the direct conclusion
as he is building up the message.
 In ht ethree verse sumaary Krishna
establishes
 1) supreme soul is different from the two
kinds of the soul
 2) supreme person/soul is all pervading
 3) that supreme person is Krishna himself.
VERSE 15.18:-

 The Supreme Lord, in His localized aspect of

Paramätmä, is also described in the Vedas
themselves. The following verse appears in
the Vedas (Chändogya Upaniñad 8.12.3): tävad
eña samprasädo 'smäc charérät samutthäya
paraà jyoti-rüpaà sampadya svena
rüpeëäbhiniñpadyate sa uttamaù puruñaù. "The
Supersoul coming out of the body enters the
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
impersonal brahma-jyoti; then in His form He
remains in His spiritual identity. That
Supreme is called the Supreme Personality."
This means that the Supreme Personality is
exhibiting and diffusing His spiritual
effulgence, which is the ultimate
illumination. That Supreme Personality also
has a localized aspect as Paramätmä. By
incarnating Himself as the son of Satyavaté
and Paräçara, He explains the Vedic
knowledge as Vyäsadeva.
 without bhakti, the jïäné and yogé do not
even attain liberation. This is understood
from the following verses:
 naiñkarmyam apy acyuta-bhäva-varjitaà na
çobhate
 Knowledge of self-realization, even though
free from all material affinity, does not
look well if devoid of a conception of the

achieving the perfection of life, a person
will gain that perfection if he is simply a
surrendered devotee of Näräyaëa. Näräyaëéya

 Here Krishna is saying that he is beyond

both the ksara and Aksara, he is
purusottama.
 These verses are the strong refute of
mayavada.
 Krishna is saying there are two persons
liberated and the conditioned and there is
the supreme person beyond them and that
person is he himself, so no scope for the
Mayavadi interpretation.
 Summary -15.16-vct it is brahaman- Aksara
word has been used for the brahman in 8.3,by
the vct, 15.17- it says that the lord is
entering in the planets and maintaining them
so it is paramatma 15.18-lord is beyond them
so it is referring to the bhagavan.

the three sloki BG.
VERSE 15.19:-

 Simply to hear like the hogs is not

sufficient; one must be able to understand
from the authorities.
CCP:-

 The essential principle of all the knowledge

is that to understand that the Krishna is
the supreme personality of godhead.
 Then such person worships the lord with all
the emotions.
 Knowledge doesn’t lead to dissolution of the
emotions but to intensification of the
emotions, which contrarily to the Mayavadi
understanding that we need to go beyond the
emotions.
 When know that the Krishna is the absolute
truth then no need to go through the vedas.
LINK;- krishna ends the chapter with the
superlative emphatic verse.
VERSE 15.20:-

 The most important thing one has to surmount

is weakness of the heart. The first falldown
is caused by the desire to lord it over
material nature. Thus one gives up the
CHAPTER 15 THE YOGA OF THE SUPREME PERSON
transcendental loving service of the Supreme
Lord. The second weakness of the heart is
that as one increases the propensity to lord
it over material nature, he becomes attached
to matter and the possession of matter. The
problems of material existence are due to
these weaknesses of the heart. In this
chapter the first five verses describe the
process of freeing oneself from these
weaknesses of heart, and the rest of the
chapter, from the sixth verse through the
end, discusses puruñottama-yoga.

CCP:-

 Brahmaji heard this knowledge 1st he thought

conclusion to be karma kanda 2nd time he
thought the conclusion is jnana kanda then
finally 3rd time he understood the conclusion
to be bhakti to the lord.
 Weakness of the heart means instead of
serving Krishna we give in to the material
desires but by praying to the Krishna we
