Recently, there seems to have been some confusion regarding the specific requirements
for the AIS pilot plug. Pursuant to JRC’s desire to avoid any confusion regarding this
matter, we would like to submit the following information to you for your review. We
hope that this information clears up any misunderstanding that may exist.
The JHS-180 Automatic Identification System (AIS) manufactured by Japan Radio Co.,
Ltd is capable of interfacing* with a Portable Pilot Unit (PPU) **. This requirement is
outlined in IMO Safety Navigation (SN) Circular 227. The specification of IMO
SN/Circ. 227 describes clearly the plug type and pin assignment that is requires for
communication between the PPU and AIS equipment. The pilot plug that is provided
by JRC meets those specifications exactly. Therefore, JRC would like to confirm that
our AIS pilot plugs provide adequate operation on both a mechanical and electronic
level. Additionally, JRC hopes that this document will serve as a demonstration of our
compliance with IMO regulations to any surveyor that may have a question regarding
this matter.
* Note: At August 2003, the installation of pilot-plug is compulsory by authorities of Panama Canal or
St. Lawrence waterway.
** Note: The PPU will be provided by port authorities. The interface of PPU may be not match with JRC
AIS pilot plug complied with IMO regulation. In the case, the problem would be a matter of
PPU.
[DEMONSTRATION]
<Specification of Pilot-plug>
The following is a description of the IMO requirements with regards to pilot plug assembly. All
JRC Pilot Plugs are built to these specifications described in IMO SN/Circ. 227.
Page-1
< JRC Pilot-plug condition>
On the Pilot Plug made by JRC, the necessary five (5) pins are assigned to each data line suitable
for communication between the PPU and the AIS. This configuration meets the requirements set
forth by the IMO and functions properly. The other four (4) pins are un-necessary and will only
serve to increase the cost of the plug to the end user.
Furthermore, the authoritative body of the Panama Canal has confirmed that the JRC AIS Pilot
Plug is acceptable as of August 2003 and is fully capable of communication with the PPU.
It is our sincere hope that this information will clear up and confusion or
misunderstanding that may exist. If JRC can be of any further assistance to you in this
or any other matter, please feel free to contact us.

2.5 Synchronization
After installation, the AIS should be synchronised properly on UTC and that position information, if
provided, should be correct and valid.
3 Bridge Arrangement
The functionality of the Minimum Keyboard and Display (MKD) should be available to the mariner
at the position from which the ship is normally operated. This can be by means of the AIS’ internal
MKD (integrated or remote) or through the equivalent functionality on a separate display system
A pilot input/output port is part of an AIS Class A station. A plug connected to this port should be
installed on the bridge near the pilot’s operating position so that a pilot can connect a Personal Pilot
Unit (PPU).
• AMP/Receptacle (Square Flanged (-1) or Free-Hanging (-2)), Shell size 11, 9-pin,
Std. Sex 206486-1/2 or equivalent with the following terminations:
- TX A is connected to Pin 1
- TX B is connected to Pin 4
- RX A is connected to Pin 5
- RX B is connected to Pin 6
- Shield is connected to Pin 9
If there is navigational equipment capable of processing and displaying AIS information such as
ECDIS, radar or an integrated system available on board the ship, the AIS Class A mobile system
may be connected to that system via the AIS Presentation Interface (PI). The PI (input/output)
should meet the requirements of IEC 61162-2.
The display system can also include the functionality of an MKD, see 3.1.
The AIS requires that an alarm output (relay) be connected to an audible alarm device or the ships
alarm system, if available.
