ENGLISH PAPER I

Language and Writing

Three hours and a quarter


(The first fifteen minutes of the examination are for reading the paper only.
Candidates must NOT start writing during this time.)

Instructions:
1. This paper has two sections, Section A for Writing and Section B for Language .Section B is further
divided into nature of language and grammar.
2. All the questions are compulsory.
3. The intended marks for each question is given in brackets.
4. You are recommended to spend 2 hours on Section A and 1 hour on Section B.
5. You should begin each answer on a fresh page.

SECTION A: Writing
Question 1. [30]

Write an essay using the features of an argumentative essay on any ONE of the following topics and write an
original essay on it. (You are reminded that you will be awarded marks for orderly and correct presentation of
material, use of appropriate style and general accuracy of spelling, punctuation and grammar.)

(a) Damage of the environment is an inevitable consequence of worldwide improvements in the


standard of living.
(b) Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country.
(c) Women are better parents than men.

(d) Should schools install video cameras as a way to deter inappropriate behaviour?

Question 2. [30]

Write an original short story with the theme “Man has no enemies but himself” employing all the
elements of a short story with special emphasis on plot development. You are reminded that in the
above task, you will also be assessed on expression, style and mechanics.

There is a place in earth that even the most seasoned travellers considers a previlage to visit. And
allthough it is voted one of the worlds top travel destination very few makes it. This is Druk yul,
Bhutan a land of Thunder dragon.

You cannot find a more enlightening travel destination today. Perched high in the mighty
Himalayan range, the Kingdom of Bhutan has defied globalization and chosen to remain a hidden
paradise, acessible only to a fortunate few.
