Originally commissioned as a trust of a family owned business, ABC memorial cancer hospital was

one of its kind. Starting almost the same time as Indian Independence, the hospital aimed at
providing affordable cancer care to all Indians. Part of the hospital was charitable and part was -for
profit. To support the cancer cure, hospital also started a supporting cancer research institute which
was considered as the best in country. Aspiring doctors joined the research institute or the hospital
only to gain experience and access to dedicated cancer patient base. The service attitude and need
to help the patients and their family was upmost in these doctors and nursing staff members. In late
50s both the hospital and the research institute was taken over by the Ministry of Health and later
both the hospital and research centre were merged to form ABC Memorial Centre.

Presently, more than 60,000 patients visit the hospital everyday, of whom nearly 70% patients
receive this case free. It has more than 650 beds and an AOP of more than 200 Crores. The research
centre has some of the path breaking surgeries and medical innovations that have brought respite to
suffering patients. It has the state of art equipment available, a tie up with all possible international
researching and science bodies. The hospital has highest capability in immunological, histochemical,
technological, biochemical, cytological and pathological services,

In 2013, the founder owner and the government decided to take it to the smaller cities and make
cancer care more affordable to every man. This was also due to reported increase in cancer cases in
recent days. Besides the parent centre, 4 more centres, one within Mumbai and 3 in Andhra
Pradesh, Punjab and Assam were started. Now four more are envisaged. The memorial has already
tied up with the state government hospitals for the infrastructure and talent support and key
oncologists in the state who will champion this growth are identified.
