Thesis Statement: it contains bisphenol-A (BPA), preservatives, deadly bacterias, aluminum
leakage and results in the loss of many nutrients during the heating process.

I. Canned foods are harmful to one’s health because they contain bisphenol-A.
A. Scientists believe that once BPA enters the body it starts to act as a hormone.
1. BPA can interrupt formation or function of hormones in the body, also the
development of foetuses, babies, and children.
a. A 2009 research showed that BPA can affect the release of thyroid
hormone from the parathyroid gland this may affect pregnant women and
small children .
b. An experiment done on both humans and animals showed that exposure
to BPA can cause insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
2. The research indicated that the chemical causes hormonal changes that
lead to anti-social behaviour, depression and anxiety.
B. BPA leads to brain damage, harmful behavior, increased risk of diabetes and
cardiovascular disease
1. BPA can cause long-term damage to the brain, for example, memory loss.
2. BPA can lead to the narrowing and hardening of arteries and alter blood
pressure , which can lead to strokes or heart attack.

II. Canned food contains many preservatives which are not good for the body.
A. Sodium nitrate, which prevents the drying of meat, can lead to an increase in
cancers.
B. Sulfite, which prevents discoloration and browning of food, can lead to abdominal
pain, diarrhea, increase in breathing difficulties and hypotension.

III. If canned foods that are not heated properly may contain deadly bacterias.
A. Canned food may contain a bacteria known as Clostridium botulinum.
1. Clostridium botulinum can cause botulinum.
a. The bacteria grows on food and produces a toxin that, when ingested
causes paralysis.
b. The paralysis first starts on the face and moves down to the lower body.

2. If Clostridium botulinum enters the body there is a 35 to 65 percent


chance of death.
B. Bacillus stearothermophilus can be found in canned food.

IV. Canned food may lose their nutritional value during processing.

V. Aluminum cans leak and release a harmful chemical that can endanger the health of the
individuals.
A. The can receives heat; the aluminum melts off contaminating the food.
1. Accumulation of aluminum in the body can cause Alzheimers disease.
a. This affects how the brain works, as well as, how people interact with
each other.
b. The nerves surrounding memory part of the brain get tangled
preventing information to be received properly.
2. Aluminum can increased the risk of cancer.
B. The plastic lining of the cans suppose to prevent the leaking of aluminum and the
contamination of the food, however, the plastic does not prevent the aluminum leaking due to the
heating done to the can.
