A. Standard Competence : expressing meaning of short functional text and

written essay text in the form of narrative text in context daily

life

B. Basic Competence : expressing meaning and rethorical steps in written essay text

accurately, fluently and appropriately in context of daily life to

access knowledge in the form of narrative text.

C. Indicators :

2. Identifying linguistic features of narrative text

3. Producing narrative text well

D. Learning Objectives:

At the end of the learning process, students are able to:

E. Learning Material:

Narrative text

Narrative text is a story which has sequence of events are told in chronological order,

deals with problematic events and has functional to amuse, to entertain and to deal with

vicarious experiences.

Social function

The aims of narrative is to amuse, to entertain, to express feelings, to inform, to

persuade and to deal with vicarious experience in different ways as a powerful medium for

entertainment.

Kind of narrative text

1. Fiction (imaginary)

2. Non-fiction (factual)

3. Combination of both

There are three kinds of narrative text, they are:

Generic Structures:

1. Orientation: introduce the character (who is involve in the story?), the time (when the

story happen) and the place (where the story take place) of the story.

2. Complication: the introducing and the arising or the climax of the problem (what is

the problem and how the problem occur?)

3. Resolution: the problem is resolved (how the way to solve the problem) for better or

for worse.
4. Re-orientation (optional): a brief summary which is aimed to give or submit a moral

lesson to the reader.

Linguistic Features

1. Focus on specific and usually individualized participants

2. Use the past tense

3. Use of material verb/process

4. Use mental verbs

5. Use of relational process

6. Use temporal conjunction

7. Often contain dialogue and they also contain “saying” verbs that explain how people

speak (optional)

The Example of Narrative Text:

Before My Eyes Accident

I was riding a bicycle on the bypass when a bus abruptly hit a tank car. In the

beginning, I thought the bus would turn the left but then I looked at the tank car, which would

turn left too. The driver of the bus turned his bus sharply to right to avoid collision with the

tank car but it was unavoidable again. Finally, the bus hit the tank car which carried much oil

within, and the fuel ignited. The bus passengers escaped themselves by a bon dining the bus.

I got off my bike and ran to search for aids. Not taking a long time, some policeman and an

ambulance came to save the victim. After the ambulance had taken the victim to the nearest

hospital and the policeman pacified the area and I went back.
The Analysis of Generic Structures:

1. Orientation
