Second Sunday of Lent

One of the great joys of being at the Shrine is watching the wide variety of people who visit us. It is
inspiring to watch all kinds of people praying together in the churches. We have the rich and the poor,
the educated and the laborers, celebrities and the homeless.

In many churches, it’s safe to say that most of the people in the pews are from the local neighborhood.
On the contrary, the people at the Shrine are truly from all over the world. We have more than 35,000
addresses on the Shrine’s mailing list and only 58 percent of those addresses are from Massachusetts.
Whenever someone tells me that it’s their first time at the Shrine, I like to ask them where they are
from. They have often traveled some considerable distance to visit Boston. By the way, next to
Massachusetts, the state that comes up most frequently in our mailing list is New York State.

Among the Shrine’s 18,000 Facebook followers, fewer than 3,000 of them are from Boston. The town
with the next biggest cohort of followers is not a Boston suburb, but is New York City. We are happy
to have New Yorkers regularly praying with us and supporting our outreach ministries.

We friars pray that you are having a blessed Lent.

Lenten Reflection
Submitted by, Br. Tony LoGalbo, OFM

Prayer, fasting and almsgiving form the trinity of devotional

practices that the Church encourages us to perform for our Lenten
observance. Before we assume or add on observances, it may be wise to
evaluate what we are already doing. Lenten practices are not so much
a question of how many, that is doing more, so much as attending to
the quality of what I may be doing already, the things that have
already committed myself to.

If I am capable of doing more, then it would be good to consider what

else I may be able to take on. Another consideration is that the focus should
be not so much on me, on what I am going to do, but on the saving action of
Jesus Christ and what is the salvation that He wrought for me by His
suffering, death and resurrection, and how do I respond to that.

There is much to reflect on, and the season of Lent is rich and ripe
for contemplation.

Where Do We Meet the Face of Jesus?

Lent is a time of penance. Where do we meet Jesus?

How can we meet Jesus?
Perhaps we can meet him in the unexpected.
If we look, we can meet him in the unpleasant person who
has more on his or her mind than we can image.
If we look, we can find him in the face of the tired person who
appears worn down by years of hard work and disappointment.
If we look, we can find him in the simplicity of the child who looks
to a parent and says: “I love you.”
If we look, we can find him in the mother watching anxiously for her
teen to come home after staying out too late.

If we look, we can find Jesus in the person we avoid because

we find them difficult to endure.
If we look, we can find him in the stiff hands of a grandmother
thumbing her rosary, pleading for all the family she cherishes.
If we look, we can find him in the immigrant who wonders and
worries about his or her status.
If we look, we can find him in the spouse who has recently
lost his or her life partner.

If we look, we can find him deep in our souls as we examine our conscience.
If we look, we can see him in our own reflection in the mirror –
for we are called to be JESUS to ourselves and every other person who looks back at us.

at 12:30pm.

Please take this opportunity to pray with us and enrich your Lenten experience.
