UAL LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA IN PERFORMING & PRODUCTION ARTS

THE LIVES THEY LEFT BEHIND 29th JANUARY 2018- 3rd MAY 2018

Directors Delivering Project: Laura Holland/Lucy Flack 1

UAL LEVEL 3 DIPLOMA IN PERFORMING AND PRODUCTION ARTS

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Throughout this project you will work as a company to produce and perform a production of a production
called The Lives They Left Behind. This production will include sections and scenes which are devised,
produced and performed by you. The piece will be performed in the Auditorium in late March and toured
to the Brighton Fringe Festival.

You will integrate all the knowledge and skills you have learnt so far and explore and develop specific
techniques and skills needed to put out a professional piece of collaborative theatre.

You will work together to plan your ideas and concepts for the performance and create a proposal including
your ideas and plans before these are developed into a rehearsed piece.

It is important to draw upon the skills gained on previous processes and use them in devising, rehearsing
and ultimately the collaborative performance of The Lives They Left Behind.

You will take part in a variety of group discussions where you will present your findings, which will be filmed
on occasions for evidence. You will read, research and explore the possibilities of a collaborative process,
considering which genre, skills, costume, props and music to use to enhance the overall effect.

The Performance will run for 6 performances over 5 days.

You will finally write an evaluation of the final performance, where you will analyse and explore the strengths
and areas for improvement of both yourself and the group throughout The Lives They Left Behind. You will
respond to the process and your personal creative journey

ACTIVITY 1

Research what a collaborative piece of theatre entails and different roles needed to create it. Use images, spider grams, written
research notes and so on. For your research you should use a variety of sources such as books, DVDs and television programs,
mood boards, improvisations, personal props, drawings and designs.

ACTIVITY 2
Discuss ideas and create a proposal for your process. (Please see separate sheet)
This could include your ideas on theme, storyline, genre, character status, relationship, costume and staging.

ACTIVITY 3
Attend all rehearsals demonstrating a purposeful sense of focus on the work. Use and develop techniques and skills
throughout. Write weekly evaluations including your views and ideas of the rehearsals and the development of the piece. You
need to include your research and how this has influenced your work in rehearsals.
Make sure you include Director’s notes and personal strengths and areas for improvement.

ACTIVITY 4
Communicate effectively with company members and show an understanding of how the process of creating drama works.
Write an evaluation of ‘The Lives They Left Behind’, reviewing the overall process as a whole. Analyse the effectiveness of the
show and the techniques and styles used to create dramatic moments and tension and how you worked collaboratively.
Describe your personal effectiveness, including strengths and suggest opportunities for improvement.
