Lesson Plan: Let’s learn about Circles
Grade: 7
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Shape and Space
Approximate Time: 60 minutes

Learning Outcomes: Use direct or indirect measurement to solve problems

Specific Learning Outcomes: 7.SS.1. Demonstrate an understanding of circles by:

 Describing the relationships among radius, diameter, and circumference of circles
 Relating circumference to pi
 Solving problems involving the radii, diameters, and circumference of circles

Essential Questions:
 What is a circle? How can we define its shape?
 Where do we see them in our daily lives?
 What do the terms radius, diameter and circumference mean?

Assessment Strategies:

Formative Assessment  Performance Task

 Observation: Students will demonstrate their knowledge regarding circles while creating
their own example. During this time, walk around the room and watch students. Be sure
to access their overall skills and understandings. If some students are struggling with the
concept follow up the next day and plan another lesson for review.

Summative Assessment 
Achievement Check list:
1. Assess the student’s classroom assignment to determine whether
they have developed an understanding of circles
2. Assess the student’s ability to use appropriate vocabulary

3. Assess the students ability to correctly model & label radius, diameter,
and circumference
Teaching & Learning Activities:

Activate: 15 minutes
Formation: Whole class
 As students begin to enter the room, have them sit down and watch “Math Antics – What
is Pi” to activate their thinking process https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC0fZ_lkFpQ
2

 Once the video is finished discuss as a class – use the brain storming slide. Ask questions
that might activate prior knowledge as well as knowledge that they may have taken away
from the video. Have students write their responses in the concept web bubbles.

Acquire: 20 minutes
Formation: Partners & then entire class
Student Materials: Compass, grid paper, ruler, and pencil crayons
Teacher Materials: SMARTboard
*use the SMARTboard slide with the blank circle as an example.
to draw and label
1. Pair students with a partner
2. Introduce the assignment and explain how the compass and grid paper will be used
3. Students will begin by taking the compass and making a circle, placing the middle in the
centre of the x and y axis
4. Once this has been completed instruct students to colour in the circle green to illustrate its
area
5. Next have the students trace the outside of the circle with a black pencil crayon to show
circumference. Also, have them label the circle with two different colours – one line to
illustrate diameter and another to show the radius

Once everyone in the room has completed their circle gradually transition into a class discussion
and reflection on the activity. Address any concerns and ask how comfortable they feel about
circles & their properties.

Apply: 15 minutes
Formation: Entire Class
 Discuss. Use the SMARTboard to review – ask for three volunteers. Have these students
come up to the front and match one of the three terms with its correct definition.
 When finished have the class work through a few different sets of examples from the
SMARTboard. These examples will help students gain a better understanding of how to
solve problems regarding radius, diameter and circumference.

For the last 10 minutes of class

 Allow students to test their knowledge and play an online game that calculates diameter,
radius and circumference.

Future Plans: Once students have developed a basic understanding of circles, the class will be
able to move on and develop knowledge in the areas of determining the sum of central angles,
constructing the circles with a given radius or diameter, and solving problems involving the radii,
diameters, and circumference of circles (7.SS.1).

Differentiation of Instruction: (Cultural diversity / Adaptations)

Focus on the Multiple Intelligences
 Logical/Mathematical: Students will use numbers and be asked to solve math examples
 Visual & Spatial: Students will follow the lesson on the SMARTboard
3

 Kinesthetic: Students who wish to move around will have the opportunity to get up from
their seats and interact with components of the SMARTboard
 Interpersonal: Students will have the opportunity to work with partners
 Verbal & Linguistic: Students will be given the opportunity to answer questions orally

Extensions and other connections: Continue to study the Shape & Space strand relating to
Circles.
