Dear L-1 Parents,
My name is Kristi Murakami and I am very excited to be your child’s 2nd grade teacher.
Here is a little about myself.
I began my journey in education while I was attending Mililani High School. There, I
completed the career pathway for teaching. Then I attended Chaminade University of Honolulu.
While attending Chaminade, I was privileged to work as a Para Professional Tutor in the
technology resource class at Kipapa Elementary School. I graduated from Chaminade University of
Honolulu with my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education.
I believe that it is important for children to grow in all areas of their life. I believe that if I
support students to learn and grow academically, physically, socially and emotionally, students will
be better prepared for their future. I strive to guide every student towards academic success and
provide them with ample opportunities to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to be college
and career ready. In addition to that academic growth, I strive to better prepare them to live in an
ever growing, challenging world through prompting the development of their character.
During the first week of school, the students will be discussing routines, expectations and
rules of the classroom. On the following pages, are policies that will be set in place during the
course of the school year. I would greatly appreciate it if you would take this opportunity to review
this with your child. Please sign the last page of this letter, and return it by Monday, August 14,
2017.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time or stop by
to see me before or after school. Thank you!

Star Student Behavior Chart
L-1 proudly presents a star student behavior chart. Our Star Chart will be used to
monitor behavior. Each box is one day. There is a box for each school day. Everyone
has the opportunity to receive a star at the end of each day. If they are not doing
what is expected of them throughout the day, a letter will be placed in their box
accordingly. The following is a key for what each letter means:
Letter Placed What the Letter Means
in Box
B Unwanted behavior
H Missing or Incomplete Homework
L Homework Turned in Late
R Reading Log Not Complete
P No Planner Signature
D Not fully participating in D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and
Read)
T Talking at inappropriate times (Examples: when teacher
is talking, interrupting other students sharing, during
tests)
N No name, date or number on turned in
homework/assignments/tests
Students receive multiple warnings to correct unwanted behaviors before the letter
is placed in their box. Below are the rewards and consequences for this chart.
Rewards:
1. A black star is awarded to students who have no letters in their box at
the end of the day.
2. A red star is awarded for every 5th star a student receives. When they
receive a red star, they will be able to choose a reward from their Star
Student Reward Card.
3. The top 3 students with the most red stars at the end of each quarter
will be able to come in for a special lunch bunch. They will be allowed to
choose one other friend to join them. The friend they choose must have
at least 3 red stars.
Consequences:
1. If a student does not receive a star for 10 days in a row, a behavior
reflection completed by the student will be sent home. The reflection will
need to be signed and returned.
2. If a student receives 3 letters in one day, they will lose 3 minutes of
first recess and owe $3 cougar cash (fake money). If they receive more
than 3 letters in one day, 1 more minute of recess and $1 cougar cash
will be added on to their consequence.
3. If a student does not receive at least 3 red stars by the end of the
quarter, a behavior reflection completed by the student will be sent
home. The reflection will need to be signed and returned.
Behavior charts will be sent home every day. You will have the opportunity to review
your child’s behavior daily. On Friday, you must sign your child’s behavior chart for
that week. Their chart will be placed inside their BEE BiNDER.
The following page shows examples of the chart, how it will be used and the Star
Student Reward Card.
