Kitchen electrical fire brings crews to Lisbon house

LISBON – Firefighters work at 303 W. Main St., on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010. Lisbon Fire Chief Joe
Long said two people were inside the house when a small electrical fire started in the kitchen around 10
p.m. They were able to escape without injuries, said Long. Lisbon and Mount Vernon firefighters worked
the site for about 90 minutes after being dispatched. Long said the family was able to stay at their home

IOWA CITY — After colliding with a car while riding his motorcycle in downtown Iowa City on Monday a
University of Iowa football player was given a police recording of the accident. Josh Koeppel, showed
that video to friends, and soon after it was posted on the Internet, according to a City of Iowa City news
release.

Man burned at southwest Cedar Rapids home

CEDAR RAPIDS – One man suffered serious arm and leg burns this evening when he was working on a
home improvement project, said Battalion Chief George Bockenstedt.
Emergency responders were called to 1702 14th Ave. SW around 7:30 p.m., where the man had been
applying some type of coating near new drywall, said Bockenstedt. The victim was taken to Mercy
Medical Center for care of his injuries, but may later be transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals
and Clinics in Iowa City, said Bockenstedt.
There was no apparent damage to the outside of the home, and a neighbor said he never saw any fire
or smoke.
The victimʼs name was not immediately released by the fire department.

Former Edgewood water treatment plant operator

CEDAR RAPIDS — A former operator of the City of Edgewood Water Treatment Plant who submitted
false drinking water testing reports received a sentence of probation on August 26, 2010, in federal
court.
Scott John Harris, 43, from Edgewood, Iowa, was sentenced after he admitted that from February 2008
to about July 2009, he submitted false entries to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for
Edgewood monthly water treatment operational reports.
Harris claimed he tested certain chemical levels in the water but he had not performed the tests and was
aware the monthly reports he submitted were false.
U.S. District Court Judge Linda R. Reade sentenced Harris to two years of probation, 10 hours of
community service, a $1,000 fine, and a $100 special assessment.

Shots fired call brings officers to Cedar Rapids club

Between June 1 and Aug. 28 of this year police have responded 115 times to gunshots reported calls for
service.

CEDAR RAPIDS – Police were called to a night club near Coe College early this morning after gunshots
were reportedly being fired inside the establishment.
Around 4 a.m. police went to Kumbala, 1323 First Avenue SE. They searched the restaurant and also
brought people down to the station for questioning. No one was injured during the incident, police said.
Roberto Diaz, 51, was arrested for carrying a knife. Timothy Armstead, 32, was arrested for interference
with official acts. And, investigators also found a 16-year-old outside of the club who was in possession
of a handgun and crack-cocaine.
Police used a search warrant to go through the club, but a department press release said their complete
findings were not yet available.
Sgt. Joe Clark was not immediately available to comment on the incident.
Update 6:45am – 1st Ave has been reopened.
Cedar Rapids Police have taken into custody a handful after SRT had went in and searched the
location. From 13th st to 14th st on 1st ave east is currently closed and SRT members are surrounding
the block. It is unknown a reason for the activity and road closure.

can!t build a mosque. Those of us who oppose are saying “don!t do it THERE.” There are zoning
ordinances across the nation that dictate where various businesses and other organizations can build.
This is no different. There has already been discussion in NY about allowing this bunch to put the
mosque somewhere else. But now that Obama has (again) stuck his nose in where it doesn!t belong,

Judge denies bar owner temporary exemption to 21-only

IOWA CITY — Sixth Judicial Court District Judge Robert Sosalla denied Iowa City bar owner Mike Porter
a request for a temporary exemption of the cityʼs 21-only ordinance, which took effect on June 1.
Porter, owner of The Summit, 10 S. Clinton St., was previously denied an exemption from the city
ordinance, which was designed to curb underage drinking. If granted the exemption Porter would have
been allowed to admit 19 and 20-year-old patrons inside his business after 10 p.m. According to the city
code exemptions are granted if a business can show that less than half of its gross yearly sales comes
from selling alcohol.
Over the course of the month-long legal challenge Porter claimed that the system used to calculate
sales was flawed. Porter also claimed the ordinance targeted him, because he had been critical of Iowa
City Council members.

Cedar Rapids woman has trouble breathing after kitchen

CEDAR RAPIDS – Following a Saturday afternoon fire, one woman was treated on the steps of her
house because she was having trouble breathing, and then she was arrested on outstanding warrants.
Carol Rhoden, 50, of 225 5th St. NW, was inside of her house around 5:15 p.m. when a fire started in
the kitchen. Smoke was permeating throughout the two story home, and the fire department was soon
dispatched.
Capt. Rick Halleran said the smoke cleared out quickly after firefighters arrived. Any damage to the
house was not visible from the outside. Nobody except Rhoden was injured, said Halleran.
As crews continued to investigate the scene, Rhoden was treated on the front steps of the house.
Halleran said Rhoden didnʼt think any further examination was necessary at the hospital. So, she was
released from care.
But, soon police officers, who had also been sent to the scene, were talking to Rhoden inside of the
house.
The group came out of the house a few minutes later, and police put a set of handcuffs on Rhoden. Sgt.
Michelle Smothers said Rhoden was taken into custody because police had outstanding warrants for her
arrest. Those charges were assault causing bodily injury/domestic abuse, possession of a controlled
substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Itʼs not uncommon for an unrelated fire call to result in the arrest of a person who has an outstanding
warrant, said Smothers.
Rhoden was in the custody of the Linn County Jail on Saturday evening. Her bond was set at $2,000.

Update: 27-year-old man killed in Highway 150 accident

Updated with name of victim, Patrick Neal DeBrower, at 4:59 p.m.
URBANA – One man was killed in a two vehicle accident after the pickup truck he was driving crashed
into the back of a semi-trailer truck on Highway 150 around 1:40 a.m. Saturday morning.
Patrick Neal DeBrower, 27, of Belle Plaine, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a press
release from the Benton County Sheriffʼs Office.
The sheriffʼs office said the driver of the semi-trailer truck, Charles Baker, 43, of Gadsen, Ala., was
northbound on the highway, and making a right hand turn onto the road when the vehicles collided.
Gadsen was not injured in the accident, according to the press release.
The accident remains under investigation.

Update: Crews responding to Tiffin fire

TIFFIN – A teenager was sent to the hospital after lightning struck him while he was using a computer
this afternoon, said Fire Chief Brian Detert.
Zach Haight, 15, of 283 Woodfield Drive was shocked around 3:20 p.m. At the time he was using a
laptop in the basement. Haight was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and released
later in the day.
Emergency response crews from Tiffin and Oxford came to the subdivision. No smoke or flames were
reported and damage was minimal.
Haight said the nerves in his legs were tingling a little bit after the incident, but he said he wasnʼt
seriously hurt. He had yet to pick up the laptop. “Iʼm trying to avoid that area,” said Haight.

TIFFIN – One teenage male was sent to a medical care facility by ambulance after lightning struck him
while he was using a laptop computer this afternoon, said Fire Chief Brian Detert.
The lightning struck the house at 283 Woodfield Drive around 3:20 p.m. It sent a shock through to the
victim who was using a computer in the basement. Detert said the victimʼs injuries were not believed to
be serious.
Emergency response crews from Tiffin and Oxford came to the subdivision. No smoke or flames were
reported and damage was said to be minimal.

CEDAR RAPIDS – Police found a 24-year-old woman dead Thursday inside a southwest Cedar Rapids
home, but there were no signs to indicate what happened.
The death of Mackenzie L. Ervin, 24, at 158 Mayden Ave. SW is considered suspicious, police said. She
lived at the address, but it wasnʼt immediately known whether she lived there alone.
“Nobody witnessed the death,” said Sgt. Cristy Hamblin, a police spokeswoman.
Hamblin said investigators did not find anything to indicate how Ervin died. An autopsy has been
scheduled, and investigators are hoping it reveals more clues.

Man injured in accident near Cedar Rapids roller dam

CEDAR RAPIDS – One man was taken to the hospital for care after a vehicle ran into some type of
embankment near the Sac and Fox Trail and the roller dam around 11 p.m. last night, police said.
No other details are known at this time.

Candace Lint arrested after leaving CR halfway house

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids woman who walked away from a halfway house earlier in the week
was apprehended by authorities this afternoon.
Bill Kiesau, a supervisory deputy with the U.S. Marshals, confirmed that Candace Lint left the Gerald R.
Hinzman Center at some point earlier in the week. Kinzman said the 22-year-old would spend tonight at
the Linn County Jail.
“I donʼt know why she walked away, weʼd have to ask her why she walked away,” said Kiesau.
Kiesau said more information might be available tomorrow.
Lint, 22, of Cedar Rapids was convicted in 2008 for stealing a Marshals vehicle that had a rifle in it. Last
summer she led police on a high-speed chase through northeast Cedar Rapids. Following that pursuit a
federal judge ordered her to be put under the supervised custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
Since then sheʼs been at several correctional facilities, most recently the Hinzman Center.

Three injured in Cedar Rapids accident

CEDAR RAPIDS – Three people were injured in a two-vehicle accident during rush hour today in Cedar
Rapids.
The accident occurred around 5:20 p.m. when a westbound driver, trying to complete a left-hand turn
from First Avenue onto Crescent Street SE, collided with an oncoming vehicle. Three of the four people
inside the turning vehicle were injured and taken to St. Lukeʼs Hospital for car. A police officer at the
scene said all three had what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the turning vehicle received a citation for failure to yield while making a left hand turn.
Police said nobody in the other car required medical care after the collision.
Police said they were still investigating the accident.

Man arrested for allegedly having sexual contact with

underage males in a Blairstown park
VINTON – A Cedar Rapids man was arrested for allegedly having inappropriate sexual contact with
three underage males at a Blairstown park.
James William Hansen, 28, was arrested by the Benton County Sheriffʼs Office on Wednesday.
According to a press release Hansen had had inappropriate sexual contact with three males on Friday,
Aug. 6. The incident allegedly occurred at a park near Hannen Lake.
Sheriff Randall L. Forsyth said Hansen faced two counts of sexual abuse in the second-degree, two
counts of lascivious acts with a child, and one count of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse.
Hansen was in the Benton County Jail on Friday. Hansenʼs bail was set at $25,000.

Brighton teenager resued from rushing water, had been

stranded in car
BRIGHTON – A teenager was rescued early Friday morning after driving his car into an intersection of
rushing water.
Kyle Sobaski, 17, of Brighton, became stranded in his vehicle, while driving over the roadway at
McKainʼs Access on Dagwood Avenue, near 295th Street. Emergency crews came to the scene around
4 a.m., and Sobaski was rescued by boat, according to 911 Supervisor, Carla Sorrells.
An uncle, Don Sobaski, said his nephew was not injured.
Authorities were still investigating the incident.

First Avenue accident: one injured with non-life threatening

CEDAR RAPIDS – One man was sent to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle
accident around 2:45 on Friday afternoon in busy downtown intersection.
Police said the accident occurred when a man driving a westbound vehicle on First Avenue collided with
a truck that was northbound on First Street W. The driver of the westbound vehicle was transported to
St. Lukeʼs Hospital for what police described as non-life threatening injuries.
The airbags of that manʼs vehicle were deployed and the car was towed away from the scene. Police at
the scene said the injured man was cited for disobeying a traffic signal.
The driver of the truck said he wasnʼt injured, and drove away from the scene after cooperating with
police.
