CCSS.ELA- Literacy. S & L 2.2 Recount of describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or
through other media.
Objective
The student will be able to define and apply the message in the book People by being able to distinguish similarities and
differences of themselves and classmates with 90% accuracy.
Procedure
Introduce
Show the students the book People by Peter Spier. Then ask these questions to get the students to start
thinking about the story you are about to read, “Have you ever noticed things that are different between you and
other people? What about ways in which you are similar to others? Today we are going to read a book that shows
us in what ways we can be different and similar.”
Read
Read the book People by Peter Spier out loud to the class.
Discuss
As a class discuss the questions below:
Question 1: Why do people sometimes want to look different than what they are? (For example the book
discusses how people with straight hair want curly and visa versa)
Question 2: Why do you think that the author would write this book?
Question 3: What would the world be like if we were all the same?
Question 4: Everyone is different in one way or another. So why do we make fun people that are different
then us?
Question 5: How can we learn about others and appreciate them for who they are?
Activities
Students will complete “About Me” worksheet. On the worksheet they will draw themselves on the person outline.
Then they will fill in the answers to the questions.
Once students have completed their worksheets, the teacher will instruct the students to stand up if she says
applies to them and sit down if it does not. Pick at least 10 of the statements below:

After the last statement is said, have all of the students that are standing sit down.
Then the teacher states, “How many of you learned something knew about someone in this class? How
many of you were surprised that you had a similarity? We can learn more about each other by talking with
one another. We should not judge others by what they look like or what clothes they wear. We should get
to know each person for who they are and we may be surprised by how much you have in common.”
Evaluation
Teacher will grade students based on the accuracy of their spelling, that their answers are relevant to the topic,
the completion of their “About Me” worksheet. The students will also be graded for their participation in the group
activity.
