1.1.3 Relief and Climate

The area is predominantly mountainous with the Akwapem Ranges stretching into the Municipality from the
south-west to north-east across the Municipality. The south-eastern parts are lowlands. The Municipality lays
within the equatorial climatic zone which experiences substantial amount of precipitation. Rainfall is bi-modal
and ranges between 750mm and 1500mm annually. Temperatures are high and have an average minimum
of 24.9 and a maximum of 29.9 degrees Celsius. The climate and vegetation offer opportunities for varying
agricultural production.

1.1.4 The Municipal Assembly

The assembly is the highest political and administrative body. It is made up of two-thirds elected members
from the electoral areas and one-third Government appointees from the communities. The Municipality is
made up of seven Town/Area Councils. It has one constituency and represented by one Member of
Parliament.

1.1.5 Surface Accessibility

The Municipality has estimated total road network coverage of 240 kilometres including 127 kilometres of
motorable tarred roads linking up the Municipality to Accra, the national capital and other major towns as
Koforidua, Tema and Akosombo. It also has about 160 kilometres of feeder roads linking up the market
centres, major settlements and farming communities.

1.1.6 Telecommunication
The Municipality depends on private/individual telecommunication services/centres located Municipal-wide.
Efforts are however underway to provide telephone facilities to link the Municipality to the outside world. A
mask has already been erected and underground cables have been laid to provide Automatic Digital
Exchange facility to serve the Yilo and Manya-Krobo Municipalities.

1.1.7 Energy
Over half of the total number of 237 settlements in the Municipality is connected to the national electricity
grid. This provides a sound opportunity for business and industrial drive.

1.1.8 Services
A large number of small and medium scale enterprises exist in the Municipality. Common activities in this
category are hairdressing, repair shops, restaurants, drug/chemical shops, hotels and spare parts retailing.

1.1.9 Education

1.1.10 Water Delivery

The Municipality Assembly in collaboration with DANIDA, the Ghana Water Company Limited, other agencies
and NGOs has been able to provide potable water and sanitation facilities to most communities in the
Municipality. Over 65 boreholes and hand-dug wells have been constructed in the rural communities. The
GWCL provides water for the urban and per-urban communities.

1.1.11 Investment Potentials

Reports on studies carried out on the Municipality indicate a huge potential for investment particularly in the
tourism and agriculture sectors. Ironically, only a fraction of the potential of what exists has been developed.
Prospective investors can therefore help develop and upgrade existing waterfalls, nature reserves, in-house
tourism areas, handicrafts and services promotions. Besides, the south-east lowlands harbour a large tract
of farmland for commercial agriculture especially for vegetable and mango production and fruit processing.

1.1.12 Tourism
The hospitality for the Krobo’s is superb and can be counted among the friendliest and most open-minded
people in Ghana. There are three main tourist products-heritage, culture and ecology.
Yilo has an active social atmosphere. Somanya, the Municipality capital is a historic trading post, attracting
a mix of cultures. The Municipality accommodates two national tourism attractions: the famous Boti Falls and
the Krobo Mountains. Mounting climbing is emerging as an important tourism activity in the Eastern Region
of Ghana.
The widely known kloyosikplemi festival is celebrated in November each year, lasting for a week and bringing
citizens and non-citizens together and presenting an opportunity for companies to showcase their products
and promote their businesses. Several rites are also observed by the Krobo’s. Notable among the rites are
Dipo, Lapomi and KadumaFiame. The celebration of these traditional cultural events attracts a large number
of visitors to the Municipality, however, there are no standard hotel and restaurant facilities to match. It
therefore presents a sound opportunity for investors in the hospitality sector to exploit. The further
development of Boti Falls, the Umbrella Rock and the 3-HeadedPalm Tree sites presents a huge investment
area to boost the tourism industry in the Municipality.

1.1.13 The Boti Falls

The Boti Falls is located in the Boti Forest Reserve about 20km from the regional capital, Koforidua. It was
first discovered in the early 1950’s and partly developed into tourist site in 1960. The facility has a huge
potential to attract tourists world-wide but lack the requisite infrastructure to exploit such potential for the
benefit of the people. The total land area earmarked for its development is 183.62 acres of land. Currently,
there are 2-room Rest House built in 1961/62 and six uncompleted chalets.

1.1.14 Discovery of the Umbrella Rock

The Umbrella Rock is about thirty minutes’ walk in the forest from Boti Falls. It is located at a destination in a
village called Asiafro Amanfro. The Rock is sited on a high land area thus making it possible to watch nature
hundreds of miles away into the green. It was discovered by John Wary, a native of the village and referred
to the rock as Akatamann which simply means umbrella. There used to be a huge cotton tree on top of the
Akatamann and this wonderful creation became an attraction to visitors from far and near.

1.1.15 The Three-Headed Palm Tree

The 3-headed Palm Tree which is about 80 years of age has a huge stem base with three separate stems
growing into the sky. The diameter of the base is about 126cm and the three stems have a diameter of about
70cm each. The height of the trees is about 3.2 m. It has a huge lushly green leaves like any other palm tree.
It is also located in the Boti Forest at Asia Amanfro. This site of this natural facility requires further
development.

1.1.16 Agriculture sector

The Yilo-Krobo Municipality area has an extensive plain, which is suitable for mango farming. The chemical
composition of the soil in terms of its fertility is suitable for mango production. There are a number of
organizations already in mango farming in the area. In fact, the Municipal Assembly itself owns a hundred-
acre mango plantation in Somanya. The rainfall pattern is even throughout the year, however, irrigation
activity could be undertaken to supplement rainfall. The area also abounds with midday high temperatures
coupled with cold mist, which induce flowering of the mango.

1.1.17 Opportunities
The Municipality is located in one of the best mango producing areas in Ghana;
There is vast land available in the area which is conducive for quality mango farming.
The Municipality is less than an hour’s drive from Accra, the national capital. The proximity to the huge
metropolitan market and the six hours’ flight to the Europe make the Municipality enjoy a comparable
advantage over big mango producing countries like Venezuela, Pakistan, South Africa, and Egypt etc.
Irrigated large scale farming possible;

1.1.18 Fruit Processing

There exist a lot of opportunities and benefits to be derived from investing in the fruit/mango processing
industry in the Municipality. Key among these are the following:
Skills among the youth have been developed to support investment in this venture;
The Municipal Assembly has organized the farmers into out-grower scheme and associations to feed the
industry;
There is general interest in the out-grower scheme in the Municipality and this is an opportunity that can be
exploited to ensure availability of raw mango for processing at comparatively reasonable prices;
There is no cash crop in the major growing area and as such mango production can be encouraged by
prevailing upon farmers in the locality to venture into mango farming; There is the possibility of adding
pineapples and papaya processing to its product line thereby increasing revenue base of the company as
the machinery has multiple uses.
1.1.19 Handicrafts
Handicrafts production is one area which is yet to be fully developed. The production of fabrics – tie-and dye,
basketry, and sculptural pieces is an area which most local investors could take advantage of for brisk
business in non-traditional exports.

1.1.20 Real Estate Development

The close proximity of the Municipality to the Accra metropolis coupled with the large tracts of land for
residential purposes provides an opportunity for real estate developers to venture into housing projects to
serve both commercial and residential purposes. The Municipality could well serve as dormitory to the already
choked communities of Accra and Tema.

1.1.21 Industrial Estate

There exists large number of small –scale business operators in the manufacturing sector – carpenters,
dressmakers, designers, potters, painters and other whose business ideas, technical skills and
entrepreneurial qualities could be further developed and harnessed to enable them increase production.
These artisans could also be mobilized or organized under an umbrella of industrial estate so that they can
easily be identified and supported to attract financial and technical assistance to improve their operations
and performance.
