PROBLEMS FACED BY INDIA IN 2O16

 Population Growth
o India ranks second after China in total population.
o Its population is growing 20% per decade, leading to problems that include:
 food deficits
 sanitation deterioration
 pollution.
 Water Scarcity
o 97 million Indian citizens don’t get clean water
o it causes more than 1,600 deaths every day.
 Poverty
o Over 30% are living below the international poverty line, and there are not enough jobs to change that
condition.
 Unemployment
o about 69 percent of unemployed Indians are educated but lack adequate skills.
o lack of opportunity in the job market.
 Education
o Outdated learning and teaching practices
o lack of career planning and exposure results into the education without:
 actual learning of how to get things done
 complex problem-solving skills
 how to put their theoretical education into practice.
 Instant access to healthcare
 Public Transportation and Road Ways
o Public transportation and roadways have not kept pace with population growth.
o Housing, sanitation and power facilities are woefully inadequate
 Crumbling Infrastructure
o India has not been able to improve its deteriorating infrastructure in business, education and health care.
o The education infrastructure is backward, and over 280 million adults are illiterate.
o Many children do not attend school at all and instead begin working before reaching their teen years.
o Over 50% of the population is still involved in agriculture, which is an extraordinarily high number for a
country trying to make giant technological strides in the 21st century.
 Gender Inequality and Rapes
o India ranked 127 out of 146 countries in UNDP’s Gender Inequality Index with a value of 0.563.
o As per National Crime Records Bureau, there is an increase of 900% registered rape cases in India over the
past 40 years.
 In every 20 minutes, a woman is raped.
 One out every three victims is under 18 & one out of every ten victims is under 14.
 There is a higher probability that only one out of 100 rapes are reported.
 Poverty and Rising Social Inequality
o The gap between rich and poor is continuously widening.
o Adequate efforts are not made to uplift poor population, and this is worsening by inflation and corruption.
 Graft and Corruption
o The great Indian-born writer Salman Rushdie once commented in regard to India's graft and corruption
that "Indian democracy is one man, one bribe." The problem costs India's economy 6.3% of GDP per year.
 Computer addiction
Solutions to India’s Problems
o Make politicians live like the voters
o Eliminate inequality
o Unleash innovation
o The reason India doesn't have its own Apple or Samsung isn't because the country's leading minds are focused on
stripping products down to their essentials to hit the market at the bottom of the pyramid, Waslekar argues. It's
because industry isn't paying enough attention to research that doesn't have immediate impact on their
company's bottom line.
o Deploy technology to democratize education
o Improve relations with key neighbors
o Uber, Ola, and Carpooling
o invest in solutions by offering different sanitation products and services at appropriate prices.
o Waste Management
o Easy access to quality education
o apps that can educate students while making it a child’s play,
o Stable Electricity
o Safety of Women
o Access to clean drinking water
o Effective Police
