MASTER OF MUSIC IN MUSIC PRODUCTION, TECHNOLOGY AND INOVATION

PORTFOLIO

I’ve uploaded 3 songs which I produced, recorded, mixed and mastered. The first two
songs were songs produced for soloists and the third song was produced for a band.

SONG 1 – RONDA MULTINACIONAL, IGNACIO ARIAS

This was a song written by a songwriter whom I met while studying in Buenos Aires. His
songs are written for guitar and vocals. When I heard his demo, I knew that I could add
some color by adding other instruments and a female singer. I added an intro to the
song, raised the tempo in 10 bpm, and changed the song tonality from G to A, a
modulation to Db in the second section of the song which goes back to A in the second
chorus of the song.

Once defined the new form, tonality and tempo of the song, I started to have the
rehearsals with invited musicians. The new elements were: drums, bass, keys and a
female vocalist.

After a couple rehearsals the recording sessions began, starting with the drums and
bass to establish the bossa feel of the song, then I recorded the guitars and vocals, to
finally add the keys.

When recording vocals, the singer got really nervous and anxious because it was his
first experience in the studio. So I had to help him calm down and motivate him to give
his best performance.

Through the recording, mixing and mastering process I aimed to keep the organic vibe
of the song. With this in mind, the effects and processors were used subtly.

SONG 2 – TEN MILLION BUTTERFLIES, VALENTINA HORMAECHE

This song was written by the singer with an acoustic guitar as main element.

After hearing the demo, I decided to speed up the tempo and modify the form of the
song. I also proposed the intro of the song, the interlude, guitar solo and the outro.
The song had a folk/country vibe. In this way I invited musicians to record drums, bass,
acoustic and electric guitar.

Since the singer wanted to keep the preeminence of the acoustic guitar, I recorded
many overdubs of it. All the instruments were recorded separately.

The mixing and mastering was performed also by me.

SONG 3 – FUERZA, MAR BAND

When producing this song, the challenge for me was to immerse myself in the style
which I was not particularly familiar with and deal with the perspective of every member
in the band. The song had a definite structure already and I had to come with
convincing ideas for them to change their mind.

I proposed to change the key of the song from Dm to Dbm, in order to make it more
suitable for the singer’s vocal register.

Another problem I found was the length of the song. So I reduced the length of the intro,
the interlude, and the solo. In order to change that I had to rearrange the guitar licks and
guide the solo composition for the guitar. I also added a different intro to the song and a
calm break after the solo, to add dynamics to the song.

In the recording and mixing phase, the challenge was to get that rock metal sound for all
instruments. A kick drum sample sound was added to the original. The sound of the
guitars was obtained using impulse responses software to emulate Soldano and Mesa
boogie amps. The bass sound was obtained by recording a 5 string Warwick bass
through an Aguilar preamp and adding CLA compressors in the box.

In the mastering phase, the sound of the mix previously obtained was preserved, with
just minor adjustments on the high and low frequencies.
