evidence of bone marrow response to an increased peripheral demand.
Comment Depending on the degree of anemia, a reticulocyte count <50 K/uL may
indicate an inadequate bone marrow response. Serial monitoring of the
erythrogram and absolute reticulocyte count may be useful to evaluate
bone marrow responsiveness over time.

The following chart can be used as a guideline to determine

appropriateness of regenerative response.

Total T4 1.6 0.8 - 4.7 µg/dL 3.9 3.2

a Interpretive ranges:
<0.8 Subnormal
0.8-4.7 Normal
2.3-4.7 Grey zone in old or symptomatic cats
>4.7 Consistent with hyperthyroidism

Cats with subnormal T4 values are almost exclusively euthyroid sick or

overtreated for their hyperthyroidism. Older cats with consistent
clinical signs and T4 values in the grey zone may have early
hyperthyroidism or a concurrent non-thyroidal illness. Hyperthyroidism
may be confirmed in these cats by adding on a free T4 or by performing
a T3 suppression test. Following treatment with methimazole, T4 values
will generally fall within the lower end of the reference range
(0.8 - 2.3).

a The American Academy of Feline Practitioners highly recommends confirming

FeLV ELISA positive results. Consider the FeLV Antigen by IFA (test code 717)
or the FeLV RealPCR Test (test code 2635).

b The American Academy of Feline Practitioners highly recommends confirming FIV

ELISA positive results. Consider an alternate serologic method such as the
FIV Antibody by Western Blot (test code 896) or a Feline Triple SNAP test
(test code 3755 or performed in house). Maternal antibody may be present in
uninfected kittens younger than 6 months of age. Cats vaccinated with the
FIV vaccine may test positive on any serologic test as early as 28 days
post-vaccination and stay positive for at least 1 year. In serologically
positive cats that have been vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination
history, an FIV RealPCR Test (test code 2866) should be considered to help
identify FIV-infected cats.

a
Feline NEGATIVE NEGATIVE NEGATIVE

a A positive Fever of Unknown Origin RealPCR Panel result indicates that

DNA or RNA of that organism(s) was detected in the sample submitted.
In animals with clinical signs, this supports infection. Zoonotic
potential may exist for certain organisms. Vaccination with a modified
live vaccine may result in positive results for up to a few weeks
post-vaccination.
If positive for feline coronavirus (FCoV), the FIP Virus RealPCR Test
should be considered to differentiate the virulent feline infectious
peritonitis virus (FIPV) biotype from the nonvirulent feline enteric
coronvirus (FECV) biotype. The FIP Virus RealPCR Test Add-on (test
code 36301) can be used to request biotyping on current sample or a
new specimen can be submitted for FIP Virus RealPCR Test (test code
3630). Recommended specimens for FIPV biotyping include peritoneal or
pleural fluid, or tissue aspirate or biopsy. Whole blood specimens are
acceptable but commonly have insufficient viral particles to allow biotyping.

A negative Fever of Unknown Origin RealPCR Panel result indicates that

DNA or RNA of that organism(s) was not detected in the sample
submitted. However, a negative PCR result may be caused by the numbers
of organisms being below the limit of detection, a decreased number of
organisms following treatment or chronic carrier state, or the
occurrence of new strain variations. If FIP is suspected, the FIP
Virus RealPCR Test (test code 3630) on an appropriate specimen (e.g.
peritoneal, pleural or CSF fluid or tissue biopsy or aspirate) could
be considered.

Images are submitted as jpegs. The cranial most thorax is excluded from the lateral views submitted.
Suggestions for further patient management: Examine skin of thorax for any puncture wounds if patient
is exposed to other animals. Consider further evaluation with neurologist consult to further define source
of pain as clinically indicated.
