Social Studies Lesson Plan Overview

Part A
1. Overview of Point of Study
Grade 8 students will explore societies of the past and make connections
between the past and present. Students will become aware of differing
world views and the factors that influence societal change. They will
explore why the past is influential on the present and future. Teacher
will introduce myths and legends surrounding ancient civilizations to
students and challenge their personal knowledge on the subject.

2. Conceptual Map of the Framework

Students are the central focal point of the framework, the teacher will
engage students into discussion about what they know, what they want
to know, and what they will learn to finish the lesson. The teacher will
build on their knowledge and expand their thinking on the topic so they
can challenge what they already know. By challenging their thinking
the teacher can incorporate different GLOS as the unit progresses to
enlighten the students even further. The GLOS that will be used for this
unit plan are Power and Authority, Historical Connections, and Identity,
Culture, and Community.

Part B
1. Why Grade 8?
I chose grade because I believe that I will be able to engage them in a
more in depth discussion on the topic of Greek Myths and Legends. I
will be able to challenge their prior knowledge to further educate them.

2. Summary of Clusters
 Importance of knowing and understanding the past
 Explore life in Mesopotamia, Egypt, or the Indus
Valley
 Focus on Greek and Roman culture and society
 Explore art, technology, and achievements during the
transition to the modern world
 Explore events that shaped and continue to shape and
influence the modern world

After this lesson is completed the next class will be focused on the
students own personal stories that they may have related to the findings
on the research assignment. This will open up new learning
opportunities and possibly connect the students stories together and then
the teacher wil help them expand on them.
