Objectives/Outcomes (Indicate GCO and SCO) (Indicate SCO in student friendly language)
GCO: How to mow the lawn.
SCO: I can label the parts of a lawn mower (yesterday’s lesson)
I can explain the steps for mowing a lawn safely.
I can demonstrate how to mow a lawn safely. (tomorrow’s lesson)
Introduction
Greeting: (Hook) On the whiteboard outside the door it will say, “Wait outside the classroom until Ms.
Mellish comes outside and calls your names. As a group you will follow Mr. Dupuis into the classroom and
he will lead you to the proper table”. Ms. Mellish will be standing at the door to call student names in their
groups one table at a time. Mr. Dupuis will have the lawn mower and direct each group to the correct table.
Ms. Jones & Ms. Morgan will be at the tables to give the instructions for bell work to the groups. Toy mowers
will be displayed in the center of the class. Using the green tape, make 5 rows for the mowers (lawn model)
in the center of the classroom to use as lawn. White tape to make a shed for the mowers to be stored in
back of class.
There are 5 tables in the classroom. Each group is made accordingly with the list of the groups given below.
Arrange accordingly, if there are any absences, so the groups roughly have the same amount of people at
each table (4-5 people per table).

Bell Work Instructions: Yesterday’s activity sheet of lawn mower parts will be on the tables when students
arrive. Based on yesterday’s lesson of parts of the lawn mower have the students finish completing their
activity sheet. They can work together to make sure everyone in the group has all the correct labels. At
8:30am the students will have 2 minutes to discuss as a table their answers. (Set timer) Transition raise
hand until everyone is quiet and looking at you.
Introduction: Ms. Mellish will get attention of the class and talk to them as Crandall students and say, “This
is a grade 6 classroom and we are doing the second lesson out of 3”. Back to grade 6: introduce the
teachers, go over the classroom expectations (raise my hand and wait to speak; do my work; when the
teacher is speaking, I am listening. Then demonstrate and practice the attention getter methods that will be
used finally go over the morning’s agenda and the GCO and SCO. Transition to Ms. Jones.
Mr. Dupuis & Ms. Morgan will hand out labels for the diagram on board (2 tables will have 2 labels and 3
tables will have 3)
Labelling the parts of the Lawn Mower (review): On the side board there will be a big diagram of a lawn
mower to label the parts. Ms. Jones will review sheet ensuring all are filled out by having 1-2 student from
each group come up to the board and put up their labels on the lawn mower diagram. Call on groups 1 & 2
to go put their labels of parts on the board, then call on groups 3 &4, and finally, group 5. Give a quick
overview as a class ensuring the labels are correct and everyone understands. Ms. Jones will put answer
key on the LMO for the diagram. *Before moving on check for understanding by asking students to stand up,
touch the sky if you understand, touch your toes if you are not sure, if someone doesn’t understand ask a
student that does understand to label the correct part.
*It should now be around 8:40am when this is completed, this whole activity should take around 8-10
minutes. Transition to Ms. Morgan.
Assessment
Formative: As a group students will label a diagram of the mower (brief review of yesterday’s lesson).
Formative: Activity sheet of steps and safety tips. One will be passed in for each group.
Formative: The teacher will have checklist to go around during each activity and checking yes or no for
correct responses. Asking about lawn mower parts, steps required and safety tips. Pause for understanding
if necessary.
Summative: Students will demonstrate knowledge with toy mower. Students will be asked to demonstrate a
different group’s step and safety tip.
Summative: When the students are using an actual mower in the next lesson, they will be graded using a
rubric which will generate a final grade (tomorrow’s lesson).
*Positive reinforcement with stickers when students give correct answers and participate.
Closure
There will be 5 rows for the students to practice the steps.
Ms. Mellish will have 1-2 students from each group come in the middle of the class to demonstrate one step
from a different group to mowing a lawn safely using a toy mower. Use safety glasses. Review the
classroom expectations to remind the class they need to have respect and sit quietly while their classmate is
completing this task. Using green tape, make 5 straight columns in the center of the room for the students to
demonstrate using the toy lawn mower, this will help guide the straight lines. Remind the class that it is ok if
you don’t get a turn with the toy mower today, there will be more time to practice tomorrow.
“Remember boys and girls, not everyone will have a turn today but you will tomorrow when we take it out to
the field.”
If there is enough time and mowers, have two groups demonstrate at a time, make sure to make enough
rows for all the mowers.
*It should now be around 9:00 am when this is completed, this whole activity should take around 6-8
minutes.
Transition hand clapping until everyone repeats it back and is quiet looking at you, then dismiss.
*Remind class, tomorrow morning when you come in we will meet in the field to practice mowing the lawn.
Bring proper clothing and footwear.

When you are watching the video listen for the safety tip that goes with your step, if you can not find a safety
tip you may need to come up with one on your own.
Safety Tips:
1. Make sure there is no open flame around the gas and oil.
5. Do not succeed the maximum amount of oil. (not in video but a good tip)
