Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 3

I- Objective: The Grade 3 pupils should be able to identify and visualize symmetry in the environment
and in design with 75% proficiency.

II- Subject Matter:

A. Content: Symmetry in the environment and in Design

B. Reference: Mathematics 3- Teachers Guide pp. 260- pp.263
C. Materials:
picture of butterfly, scissors, chart, bond paper, drawing materials, manila paper and masking
tape.
D. Mathematical Concept and Skills:
1. Symmetry is when a figure has two sides that are mirror images of one another.
2. Construction of basic shapes such as squares, rectangles, triangles, circles
E. Value Focus: Creativity

III- Learning Procedure:

Teacher’s Activity Pupils Activity

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
Class, please stand and let us put ourselves in the In the name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit …. Amen!
presence of God. (Our Father)
2. Greetings
Good Morning Class! Good morning ma’am!
3. Checking of Attendance
Who’s absent today? None ma’am
4. Review
Last time we discussed about the Perpendicular,
Parallel and Intersecting Lines.
Let’s have short review.
 What is Perpendicular line? Perpendicular lines are lines intersect and form four
right angles.
 What is Parallel line? Parallel lines are lines that do not meet

 How about the Intersecting lines? Intersecting lines are lines meet at a common point but
they do not necessarily form 90 degrees.
Very good!

5. Motivation
Class, I have here a song, Fly, Fly the Butterfly. Yes ma’am!
Are you familiar with this song?

Okay, let us sing this song together…

Fly, fly, fly the butterfly
In the morning, it’s flying high
In the meadow, it’s flying low
Fly, fly, fly the butterfly

What was the song all about? It’s all about the butterfly!
Very Good!

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation

What can you say about this picture Butterfly

Very Good!
If I will fold this butterfly into two

Yes Ma’am!
Is the butterfly equally divided?

And this is what we called Symmetry. When we

say Symmetry is when a figure has two sides that
are mirror images of one another.

We can also draw a line trough a picture of

butterfly and along either side the picture of
butterfly would look exactly the same.

And this line would be called line symmetry.

2.Activity
I will group you into four groups. Each group
must observe the pictures and discuss if the
pictures are symmetrical or not symmetrical
GROUP 1

3.Analysis

I have here a folded rectangle in this way.

What have you observed? Not equally folded

Very Good! This rectangle does not show a line
of symmetry.

But if I fold it in another way?

What have you noticed? Does the folded part

match perfectly with one another? Yes ma’am

How do you call the folded line? Line of Symmetry

Very Good!

4. Abstraction

Again class, What is Symmetry? How do we know

that a figure or object or shape is symmetrical? Symmetry is when a figure has two parts that are mirror
images of one another.
A figure is symmetrical if you can draw a line through a
picture of the object and along either side the image
would look exactly the same.

What other examples in the environment can we

find that show symmetry? Trees, Human face, etc……

5. Application
In your group earlier. I have here magazines look
through it and cut out objects that you think are
symmetrical. Fold the cut-out pictures into two
and check wether it is truly symmetrical. Then
tape the cut-out pictures up on your manila
paper and explain why you chose it.
IV-EVALUATION:

Identify if it is a Symmetrical or Not Symmetrical.

V- Assignment:
