NOTE: [Ä] and [@r] are treated as the same in this exercise, and
represent the sound in her.

1. In Set 1 write the phonetic symbol representing each of the following


consonant sounds (don’t forget to use square brackets “[ ]”). The first
one is given as an example.

2. In Set 2 write the phonetic symbol representing each of the following


vowel sounds (don’t forget to use square brackets). The first one is
given as an example.

3. In Set 3 write the three-part articulatory descriptions for the consonant


sounds represented by the following symbols. The first one is given as
an example.

4. In Set 4 write the four-part articulatory descriptions for the vowel


sounds represented by the following symbols. The first one is given as
an example.

5. In Set 5 identify the phone that does not belong and the natural class
of the others.

6. In Set 6 give the spelling of the phonetically transcribed words. You


should note that some may have more than one spelling, you only need
to provide one spelling. The first one is given as an example.

7. In Set 7 give the phonetic transcription for the American English


words. The first one is given as an example.

8. In Set 8 give the spelling of the phonetically transcribed utterance.
Remember, in “normal” speech, some sounds are reduced, not fully
pronounced. Write what the sentence would be in careful speech.
